My preference -

autox: carbotech kelate metallic ("green"). Exceptional initial bite, but poor temperature threshold. Use both in front and rear to keep nose dive down and induce rotation under trail braking, although makes rear end unstable on light cars.

street: KVR "silver". Quiet, no dusting, better temp threshold then kelate metallic, excellent stopping power and wear characteristics.

track: Carbotech Panther Plus. Amazing pads, but poor on the street (some people care about that stuff?)

Edit: stay away from stillen/metal master, EBC Green

AutoX: AutoZone Performance Friction Specials with lifetime warrenty, with R4S rears.
Street: Same PF fronts with stock rears.
Track: Carbotech P+ with R4S rear.

I wouldnt attempt to run the HP+ on the track. There is no such thing as a street, even autoX/track pad.

while i havent used them, i know a few guys that have used autozone extreme/heavy duty brake pads on the track. They hold up well, and while the stopping power isnt nearly as good as the P+, its a cheap track pad.....

i agree, which is why I was asking...I think though, that it being my first ever HPDE/driving school i'll be driving at 5-6/10ths at most, so I figure I could get away with using the HP+ that one time

Never heard of those. Sounds more like a truck pad, which I doubt PF would make for a passanger car...

Well, you can buy them so......... not just a truck pad. I dont know if its the "performance friction" brand name, nor did i ever say it was.

Damn, I wasnt questioning your statement or anything, I was just curious if you could buy such a thing.

Then ask, rather than assume....

which I doubt PF would make for a passanger car...
And yes, you can. Otherwise i wouldnt have said it. While not the best stopping pad out there, they'll hold up at the track, and they're fairly cheap.

Have you ever tried Porterfield R4S pads?

I like them, but I'm not thrilled w/ their cold performance and occasional noise, esp. when they get hot.

I've gotten assurances from Andie at Carbotech that Ultimates wouldn't be as noisy, but he also says that they may have slightly worse cold "bite" that R4S pads, so this doesn't settle things for me, esp. since initial bite is so important in street use.

Hence, I'd like to know more about the KVRs, regarding noise and, more importantly, how they grab over the temperature range.

Thanks.

I never got around to trying them on my cars... since i was using the same car with various brake pad compounds, i could get a good indicator of what worked and what didnt.

I have heard nothing but good thinks about the R4S though.

The KVR 'silver' have a temp range of up to about 900 degrees F. They'll roast on the track, but hardly ever fade on the street (unless you really dog them). Good initial bite and very easy to modulate - there are pads that have better initial bite, but these pads are always quiet and have good stopping power when the pressure is applied. Unfortunately my reviews are all subjective, i dont have 60-0 stopping data.

Thanks.

What pads do you consider better performers (guessing panther plus, or any racing compound), but are still acceptable for street use (far fewer choices here, after this exclusion)?

I'd like to hear your opinions.

i'd go with the panther plus. dusty, noisy, not much cold stopping power, but damn when they warm up.............

just gotta clean the dust off once a week or so.

For most vehicles on the street, the Axxis Ultimate is a great street/auto-x compound: low dust, no/low noise, rotor friendly, good wear rates, 15-20% improved braking torque over OEM. Prices range from $45-$92.25, depending on car. NSX/ITR is $92.25...all over H/A vehicles are under that.

Andie,

Is there anything out there that is low/no noise, and has better cold bite than ultimates or R4S, and can take 1000-1200 degree temps (a possibility on FWD cars from triple digit speeds)? Even if you guys don't sell it.

Additionally, how do the Ultimates perform as factor of temperature when compared to OEMs? Would initial brake torque still be better for the Ultimates?

Is there any place on the scale where OEM pads equal or exceed the performance of the Ultimates (I assume cold braking/initial bite)?

yea...looks like alot of ppl have different pads for each ride....street autox track

I know changing the pads is simple but I'd like to have a great pad that will last because my car is daily driven but will also do well the autocross....if I decided to take it to the track I wouldn't mind getting something different for that.

so good street and autox pad......on stock rotors. my car is still pretty new

My issue is trying to find a good auto-x AND occasional track pad.

I'm going to be using oem for now, but as I start getting more auto-x's under my belt, i'm probalby going to want a better autox pad, and sincee I'm only doing 1 track school this year, I can't justify going out to get the P+ or Hawk Blue etc, since they wouldn't be too great in autox. ah well

Use stock pads, drive like a sane individual on the street. Much less hassle and wear-n-tear....

so what do you all have to say...I know this damn brake question has been beat to death

are stock pads no good for autox....especially if I do it often. I use them now and they seem fine....and they are worn so thin.

STOCK PADS FOR AUTOX?? they are only $35 for a front set.

He drives auto-x and wants a response about that, not a comment about how you think he should drive on the street. Let's try to stick to answering questions rather than trying to tell peope how you think they should drive.

When i share the same public roads as everyone else i'm entitled to my own opinions. I have been damn near hit or blindsided by "aggressive" drivers on the street. Had i not been paying attention, i would have been involved more than a few accidents.

Hehe...not that I know of...else I'd want to get my hands on it!

Ultimates will perform as well as OEM when cold, but bite harder, and be fade free up to 1000F.

There are many sources for Ultimates...we are just one of them.
