Default 2001-2005 Civic Fuel Filter Question

Does the fuel filter ever need to be replaced on a 2002 Civic? I read somewhere that there is a "lifelong" fuel filter inside the fuel tank and it never needs to be serviced. I read somewhere else that it can be accessed through a hatch under the rear seat. It seems to me that it has to clog eventually. I presume that all 2001-2005 Civics have the same design.

under the rear set will be a silver cover that access's the fuel tank, the fuel filter is part of the whole fuel pump assembly
