Bense's comparison of close ratio gears vs. stock gears + numerically higher final drive.

So in summary, final drives are an excellent upgrade that do in fact help acceleration very significantly.
But the close ratio gears help acceleration even more!
So...
1st tier = final drive
2nd tier = close ratio gears
3rd tier = BOTH!

Could you make a transmission with the first 4 gears at a close ratio (up to 105mph) and then making the 5th gear be a "economy" gear where the motor is running at 3,000 rpm at 80mph on stock tires?
it's possible. We should get a lot of guys talking to infinitude about a overdrive gear. I think a 0.6 or a 0.55 ratio would be nice.
This would be awesome. Conquering the compromise between a street/race car

That would totally kick butt. I would love to buy a tranny with a long gear ratio for 5th.
I need to find a nice EX/Si tranny for the short ratios. I'll buy that gearset from infinitude whenever they make it.

Easier said then done.

Not really. It is easy. Then again I work on transmissions all the time.
yea im already discouraged. transmission is already dropped, how many hours for a n00b(me).
is a lsd easier??

2-3 hours.
LSD you still have to take out the shafts to get to the diff

if you're installing a final drive and a lsd the final drive will take like 20 minutes longer than a lsd install.
yeah, if you're planning on getting an LSD, get a final drive
and the same for vice versa.

I have a cx tranny on my d16y7 and I want performance and mpg. Will buying a ex tranny and swapping the 5th gear from my cx to the ex allow me to have the first four gears for fun and the fifth for the highway? Will the higher final drive of 4.25 in the ex raise my highway rpms significantly compared with the 3.722 in my cx tranny?

4.71 for axle ratio, 0.702 for 5th gear
and put your tire size in
22.7" diameter for stock.

An issue with my tranny is the space between the gears. At first gear redline, when I shift to second i'm down to 4000 from 7400. Wonts this situaction still exist with the higher final drive but just happen sooner? Almost as if you are moving all the gears forward but still keeping the space between them, or does a final drive shorten the distance between gears as well?
Also if I wanted a closer geared tranny what is a good way to do it, selecting from the oem d-series tranny pool, and knowing that I have a perfect condition cx tranny?

1st -> 2nd gear sucks no matter what. rpm drop will always be the same.
shortest oem setup is
ex 1st & 2nd
dohc cable zc 3rd
vx/cx 3rd as 4th (will have to grind on the inside of mainshaft gear to fit synchro hub)
dohc cable zc 5th
that's
3.25
1.9 or 1.909
1.346
1.066
0.878

This info is so helpful, you have no idea. Which course of action would net the best results, 4.7/4.9 final drive in the cx tranny, or a swap to the ex tranny? Is there anyplace that sells individual oem gears for a decent price, such as the dealership? Maybe one could order just the first and second gears of the ex and the dohc zc cable third from honda and swap them in? (Also this is all for an ek, I'm not sure of the compatibility/similarites of the transmissions from the eg and ek)
