porting my head(searched)
alright so ive been searching for the past half an hour bc i know how everyone likes to say search but thats not the case here
i have been considering porting my head for awhile now and posted in all motor before trying to find out my about it but still want to know a few things before i go ahead and do it
so i have a few questions
i heard if you port&polish your head theres a chance at loosing hp,if thats so should i just get my head ported?
how much hp should i expect to gain after having this done?(mods in sig)
any feed back would be great or anything else i should know such as horror stories let me know
thanks ahead of time

I can't directly answer your question, but read this link and there are tons of more links in there about porting and other good info. Hope this helps.

Probably another useless post by me, but have you tried contacting some of the leading head porting companies and discussing your questions with them. Im sure they would be willing to help you out and explain everything in more detail to you.

no i havent talk to them,i have a few buddies with shops that are willing to do it for me but they told me polishing it isnt always a good idea thats why i ask
and i dont really want to have it done if i might loose power
so im trying to see if i should just get cams or something

From what i've read/seen i've only seen power lost from poor quality port jobs (When done by a inexperienced machinest).
If your really worried about it, i would just stay away with it for know and get some more aggressive cams and do some other work for now.

Edit - sorry for posting all over your thread without really asnwering your questions.
Bump to help find an answer.

well bigger is not alsways better.. For your setup i would focus on improving air flow quality instead of quantity.
polishing the exhaust port is good, polishing chamber and intake port is no good.
Inatke port you dont want to polish because it will help separating fuel molecules from the air, causign more puddling and such. 60 grid does a good job and keeping things as they should.
chamber is good to also leave them with a around 60 grid because base carbon cristals on the camber is combustion's process natural ''enviroment''. if polished carbon has a harder time building onto there .

You want to port and polish the exhaust, but you don't particularly want to polish the intake side, just port it cause you want turbulance coming into the engine, helps to swirl the air which gives you a better air fuel mix. Aside from that I know you don't want to get too out of hand with your porting for street applications because if you open it up too much it slows the air down which will cause you to lose power at low RPMs.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Most pnp jobs make the ports substantially bigger, which will cause you to lose power, unless you have the need to suck in that much air without adding airspeed. On a turbo car, with big cams, a big turbo, and making like 400+ whp, it would help to have the ports enlarged. What I would do, is have the intake side port-matched, and get a valve job, and on the exhaust side, get it port matched, and polished, with a valve job.
