Crx starting problem, help me if you can
My car acts VERY weird, sometimes it starts right up, other times it does not. I replaced the starter with a junkyard one, and the same thing happens.
I tested the voltage from the starter wire and i get 11.45 volts unplugged from starter.
When I plug the wire into starter and turn key to starter position I only get 5 volts(when it won't start) However if car has been running a while and I shut it off, it always starts up, I did a voltage test when it started and got 9 volt reading.
Anyone have any idea whats up ?

No, sorry. the power wire. The ground would be a good idea too.
i think the power wire comes from the fuse panel under the hood. i can't remember. just follow it from the starter back to where it gets its main power. Replace that wire.

I have one wire coming from the ignition to a small quick disconnect like connection on starter, gets 12v cranked until hooked up, then i have another larger ring style terminal one going from the positive battery to a stud on starter. <didnt test this one. And now that I think of it i don't even remember a ground wire.
Battery ground is what i was talking about, sorry. you edited your post before i could reply. Test the main power and let us know what that does. If i keep giving you ideas, i'm afaid I might confuse both of us. lol
Ok, main wire coming from battery gets full 12 volts, when cranked it still gets full voltage.
So heres the breakdown,
1. Signal wire cranked unconnected 11.45 volt
2. Signal wire connected/cranked 5.4 volts
3. Main wire 12 volts consistently.
If I jump a wire from positive battery terminal to the small signal wire on starter it starts everytime.

Might have something to do with the ignition switch.
Without being there to see it I won't be able to help you anymore.
See what some others think, they might have had a similar experience

I had the exact same problem on my G/f's CRX and it was the ignition switch.
After like 3 months of trobleshooting a friend told me he had the same problem and it was the ignition switch... so I "Bought" one from the junkyard. installed it in like 3 mins and POOF the problem was completely eliminated ever since (7 mons.)
When i opened the old switch up to examine it it was black and burnt looking...
Hope that helps.. it's worth a shot..

Check your body grounds. I had the same problem with my daily driver. Make sure you're engines grounded to your battery and to a part on the chassis. The way I corrected this problem was make a 3-way wire. Make sure everythings brought down to bare metal before connecting them too.

what size relay did you wire up? can you take a picture and post it up? i have a friend who is having the same problem w/ her crx, we replaced the igniton a while back and seemed to do fine for a while, but it seems like it started up again...

You will need a relay:
http://www.radioshack.com/prod...earch
or you can get a relay + socket for cheaper on ebay(socket makes cleaner install)
http://cgi.ebay.com/12-Volt-30...wItem
you will also need:
1.Wire, i used 12 gauge should be able to use smaller wire
2. Connectors: 4 female disconnects, the larger size from radioshack, only need 1 of these if you have a socket. 2 spade connectors, 1 to fit the battery post or a direct power sorce, the other will need to be big enough to fit a clean ground.
3. Tools, a wire crimper/stripper/cutter
Here is what I did.
1. Ran the signal wire to post 85 on the relay
2. Measured/cut wire to run a line from post 86 on relay to a clean ground on chasis.
3. Measured/cut wire to run a line from post 87 on relay to the starter connection, where signal wire originally was.
4. Measured/cut wire to run a line from the battery terminal to post 30 on the relay. Use a fuse here if youw anna be safe, I didn't
.
Very easy job, I did it with no relay knowledge just researched and found out how myself.
