Default aluminum downpipe and dumptube

i was planning on going with a ss 4" downpipe and a ss 2" dumptube. but i was thinking that is going to be pretty heavy. is anyone using aluminum downpipes and dumptubes, not too much worried about the dumptube. whats the thickness of the aluminum to go with when using it as a downpipe? thank you.

Aluminum isn't a good choice for exhaust components on a street car. Aluminum will fatigue easily. Also, the weight savings will be minimal.

well it isnt really a street car. i thought ive read that if its thick enough, it wont fatigue. so 4" ss vs. 4" al downpipe... would everyone go with the 4"ss?

the weight savings would be pretty significant

4" X .065 304ss weighs 2.73 lbs/ft

4" X .065 6061 weighs .095 lbs / ft

I would recommend a stainless steel downpipe and dump tube.

If you are going to run the exhuats towars the rear of the car I would use alu from say where the tunnel starts.

If you bracket the exhaust correctly you should not have issues with the aluminum fatigueing just be sure not to stress the part.

so is there a thickness of aluminum pipe that you recommend for exhaust pipe. that weight is pretty light. so aluminum downpipe is pretty much not a good idea? thank you for the information ekasey.

Keep in mind he wants to run thicker AL tubing to compensate for the stress so comparing the weight between the same wall tubing doesn't work.

the dumptube would probably melt.

Regardless of material thickness I would not use it for the downpipe only for an exhaust after the downpipe.

If you want to save some weight on the dump tube we do have some 2" X .035 321ss that should work just fine

ok, thank you everyone. i just thought i saw someones setup and they were using an aluminum downpipe, but i didnt know for sure. and im assuming that .035" ss is too thin for downpipe material?

Yeah it's a little thinner then I would feel comfotable going, on top of that it is extremely hard for us to source 4" 321 .035

for a track only car, a 4" ss downpipe is all that is really needed. you dont really need a full exhaust all the way to the back.

those 3 lbs of weight are really going to help out too.

shave it off your stomach before going with some thin tube...

thanks urness, im thinking about just going with a 4" downpipe, no exhaust, how loud can it be...who cares, its pretty much a track car only.

yeah i dont think i have any weight to lose at the time.

let think about this....hot gas from turbo right? first bend in aluminum will subject all those hot gas on that one spot(outter bend) and may do damage.
