Default Sneak Peak - ranta18's H22 All-Motor Build

Its finally gettting close to done! Machine work is done and parts are all here. Still lots of assembly, mock up, piston clearancing then piston coating, and some other stuff to do, but its close. HUGE thanks mostly to Dan Paramore at DPR but also to Jeff at Import Builders, Vince at Golden Eagle, and Matt at Speed Machine.

Setup:
1995 Honda H22A Engine
Golden Eagle Sleeves
IB Spec/Wiseco 89mm Strutted & Gas Ported Pistons (To Be Polsished & Calico Coated After Clearanced)
Eagle H-Beam Rods
Balanced & Polished H22 Crankshaft
DPR Stage VI+ Headwork w/ Exhaust Ports, Combustion Chambers, & Outside Calico Coated
Crower Stage 3 Cams w/ DPR Grind
Ferrea Valves w/ Calico Coating
Ferrea Valve Springs & Retainers
All Valvetrain Coated w/ Microlon
ARP Head & Main Studs
Cometic MLS Head Gasket
Golden Eagle Cam Gears
Skunk2 Intake Manifold Ported By DPR w/ Inside & Outside Calico Coated
STR 70mm Throttle Body
Custom ranta18 4-1 Header & Intake
Golden Eagle Fuel Rail
Aeromotive Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator

The block was sent off to Golden Eagle for the sleeve work and APR main studs were installed. Golden Eagle sleeves are known in the import drag racing world to be some of the strongest and highest in quality:

DPR did the bore and hone, decked the block, and balanced and polished the crankshaft to exact specifications:

Import Builders hooked us up with these amazing Wiseco 89mm strutted and gas ported pistons. These pistons will help save on weight and friction while increasing ring seal. Import Builders has some of the most advanced piston designs on the market:

Eagle rods from Speed Machine will help hold things together at high rpms:

DPR's head work is by far the best in the business. Dan Paramore has over 35 years of experience and a powerful reputation for high quality cylinder heads and engine modifications. The Calico coated surfaces help contain heat to the combustion chambers and exhaust ports, keeping oil temperatures down while increasing horsepower and efficiency:

Dan sure can make a head flow:

Crower Stage 3 cams and Ferrea valves, valve springs, and retainers are supplied by DPR and then coated in Microlon before assembly. Microlon is a dry film lubricant that dramatically reduces friction and engine wear:

Golden Eagle cam gears and fuel rail are courtesy of Golden Eagle themselves. The Skunk2 intake manifold was first ported and port matched by DPR, then sent to Calico to get coated inside and out. Speed Machine Performance provided the 70mm STR throttle body:

The custom 4-1 header should work great with the rest of the engine setup:

Shooting for at least 260 whp. 13-15:1 compression depending on how I setup a few things. Its probably going in a Comp4 setup EK hatch, but we'll see. I just want to get the bastard running. Its been 2 1/2 years since I ran it last!

All the guys that have helped rock. Dan (DPR) is definitely an awesome guy. He does Brauning's H22 headwork too. He really knows how to build something the right way and put the time and detail into it. If anyone here knows Dan, they know he can talk your ear off for hours about engines and building them.

So I'm guessing that DPR recommended the calico coatings?

What exactly are the benefits of using them in the ports and inside the IM?

build looks awesome, don't see fully built H motors too often....

Coating the outside of the head and IM reflects the heat away.. coating the Ex ports keep the ex temps up and accelerated as well as keeping the rest of the head cooler. Coating the inside with dry film helps the air flow over the metal and becomes less turbulant.

Dan from Dpr is a great guy and will do alot to help.. He helped me in many ways and I learned a ton from him.... I would have quit building cars 5 years ago if it wasnt for Dan P..

Yes, DPR recommended the Calico Coatings. Basically the manifold coating on the outside tries to keep engine bay temps out and the coating on the inside tries to keep the air inside cool. The coating on the chamber, exhaust ports, and valve faces try to keep the heat during combustion from traveling throughout the head and heating up the air, oil, etc. The piston coating is for longer life, less friction, and heat resistance also. I think its worth it in the long run. I may also get my bearings coated. Here is some detailed info:

CT-2 Coating - Is an excellent ceramic, high temperature heat management coating. It contains heat to the combustion chamber and exhaust ports. Can be tuned for increased horsepower and improve efficiency with a safer margin of error. Reduces oil temperatures 15 to 30 degrees.
Contains Heat
Increases Horsepower and Efficiency
Reduces Oil Temperatures

CT-3 Piston Skirt Coating - Is a dry film lubricant that retains oil while reducing friction and heat. This coating will allow for the use of reduced clearances without scuffing. The results are less blow-by, and increased horsepower, and less wear on the cylinder walls and piston rings. CT-3 Provides invaluable secondary lubrication that greatly extends piston life and provides superior corrosion resistance. walls and piston rings. Yep, he has helped me out a ton. Everytime I talk to him I learn something new. His knowledge in engines goes beyond anything I could ever know. I'd like to see anyone try and talk over his head He helps out a lot of people in the drag, rally, raod race, and just about every other racing scene, but is also big into church and family. The guy is so busy he works 100+ hr weeks.

Get that crap together already, seems like it's been forever since you've been building this thing.

I will be doing a full write up on the build and assembly with pictures that I'll host on my website. I'm hoping to have the main stuff together this month. After that I need to get an EMS and find someone with an engine dyno.

It doesn't look like he blended the seats or cleaned up the bowl area. But its good to see that he left the guides.I can't believe that some guys cut the guides off flush with the head.
