Check out this article that compares Snell Approved V.S. DOT approved helmets. I am not sure what to think.

IF YOU READ THE WHOLE THING THEN YOU SHOULD THINK THAT AS LONG AS YOU ARE BUYING A QUALITY HELMET WITH ONE OF THE 4 APPROVALS ON IT THEN YOU ARE OK. SOME OF THE HELMETS ARE BETTER AT CERTAIN TYPES OF IMPACT BUT THEY ARE ALL VERY SAFE ON THE GRAND SCALE.

get a ogk helmet..it is both dot and snell approved. a solid color can be had at the discounted price of 199. i went from my shoei rf-1000 to my ogk, and the ogk is lighter, vents better, and fits better. not to mention the profile (shape) of the helmet is bad ***.
