Timing Belt Question : D16A6 + D16Z6
Here is the question, in nifty thought format -
- D16Z6 Timing Belt has 104 teeth, how many teeth does the D16A6 have? ANSWER - 107 teeth
- The deck height is the same on the D16Z6 block and the D16A6 block, correct? ANSWER - 212mm
- KNOWN FACT - Timing Belt tensioners are different between the VTEC models and non-VTEC models.
- With a combination of a D16A6 Block, D16A6 tensioner, D16Z6 head, can a D16A6 timing belt be used or will it have to be the D16Z6 belt?

Match the timing belt with the head
Just playin,,
Yes the d16a6 and d16z6 have the same deck height..(212mm)
D16a6 belt has 107 teeth and its to long to use here
I did this a while back d16a6 block and tensioner and d16z6 head and I used the y8 timing belt(same as the z6 but alot cheaper) It was really really fu*kin tight and I had to take the spring out of the tensioner to get it on but I did get it on..Maybe the d15b7 belt would be better(106 teeth) but Im not sure if its to loose or not..

So the question to add on, are the water pumps the same (not mounting but size of gear and amount of teeth)?
Both waterpumps have 19 teeth..Im not sure if using a z6 tensioner would make the belt fit perfect..I would think so, but im not sure..I do think the d15b7 106 teeth belt would work though with the a6 tensioner..

It won't mount for all the life in China. The only way you are getting a D16Z6 size tensioner on the D16A6 block is if you press it off and put in the A6 bearing carrier dealy.
So the question is, which belt again? D15B7 as the D16Z6 will be too short and apply way too much downward force on the cam.

Yeah d16z6 is way to tight..Try the d15b7 belt..It has 106 teeth so it should fit perfect..

Today I had got the motor assembled from the ground up, the final choice for a timing belt for a D16A6 + D16Z6 Head combo retaining the stock D16A6 tensioner is in fact the 106 tooth D15B7 timing belt. It was loose at first but once properly tensioned it lost all slack and is on there nice and tight.

For all I know when I install the motor back in the car and get that punk to crank over the belt will untension itself, explode into a million flying shards, sever the gas line entering my garage, ignite that, and watch as a massive fireball erupts and engulfs me......or it runs fine

I didn't have a Y series one to test but you may luck out. Also, if you can get a picture or a measurement of the Y8 tensioner compared to the A6 tensioner to illustrate any size differences.
Wow, way to bring back this thread from the dead. But while it is back has anyone figured out if you can use a Y8 tensor with a Y8 belt on a d16a6 with Y8 head?
