Oil leaking from top of Koni shocks
Hi kids,
Hopefully someone here can help me. I know CRX LEE stops by often thus the Koni in the title. I have searched but did not find the answer I was looking for.
Car:
1997 Integra GSR
Built to Honda Challenge H3 specs
Koni shocks - duh
GC coil overs 600# front/850# rear
25mm GC rear swap bar
Background:
I recently had my Koni sports (yellows) rebuilt at ProPartsWest/Tripoint to the latest SPSS3 valving. I only sent theme there because the turn around time was half of the Koni shop. After 2 practice sessions on track I noticed that the rear passenger shock was leaking oil all over the place. It might have happened after the first session but I didn't look in the hatch area until after the 2nd session. I actually was going to adjust the shocks when I noticed the oil.
Here is a picture:

You can see the oil has spread up the roll cage and around the whole shock mount. If you look carefully there is a pool of oil between the frame opening and the bushings. The car was handling great (first time on the shocks after the rebuild, what a difference compared to off the self valving) the entire weekend.
Question:
Is this normal? Should I send them back for another rebuild? Should I have to pay for the rebuild (I don't think I should have to!)?
Thanks in advance for all your help.
Erik

Contact Pro-Parts and tell them of the situation. There is a small O-ring just below that adjuster inside the rod and sometimes when reinserting the adjuster rod at the completion of the servicing it is easy to put a slight knick or tear in that O-ring. That is the likely culprit. They should be able to take care of it for you. A little bit of moisture there is not a problem but real leakage volume like you have needs to be fixed.
BTW, you have the top cupped washer under the top nuts on upside down.

The koni regular sock cannot handle your extreme spring rates
unless the koni shock was custom valved to meet the same rates as your
springs.
I doubt Koni will rebuild them for nothing....

Did you get your shocks fixed? How much did it cost to have them rebuilt?</TD></TR></TABLE>
He had already had his shocks revalved and a problem occurred so he went back to the folks that serviced them.
Is your leaking shock an off the shelf unit or has it been serviced? If it is an off the shelf unit that has not been serviced and you bought it new, then it will very likely be covered under waranty so contact Koni directly at warranty@koni-na.com or 859-586-4100 option 6. If you did not buy them new so you have no warranty coverage, then contact Koni and you can have them serviced for about $130ish each or buy a new one (about the same price and fasterto you) depending on your needs.
