Default My harnesses are beginning to bug me.....

I think my harnesses keep on shifting because the harness bar has a curve right at where the harness hooks up to the bar.

It keeps on shifting on me causing the belt to get loose. I quickly have to tighten it during a session.

This is what it does which I do not like:

This is where I want it to be:

I have a few ideas myself but wanted you alls input first.

Also, the extra harness comes flapping at my arm during sessions as well. It gets annoying but dont want to be distracted. Again, I have some ideas but want you alls first. Thanks

could you not just weld some brackets to hold the straps in place? like on the sparco harness bars there are little bars welded to hold the strap properly

Tack weld a hoop to hold the belt in place.

Or use a hose clamp

I just used a couple of zip ties on each belt to hold them together.

Readjust where your "3 bar slide" is located. Get it as close to the cage cross bar as you can.

Ya that would fix the problem the best, it might eventually ride up over the hose clamps or zip ties but it all depends how you use them, they would work.

Rubber bands would work for the straps, just position them wisely so they dont get tangled and bind anything in an emergency.

And what seats are you running?

Cut some roll bar padding and put it where you don't want the belts to go.

As long as there won't be much lateral force, you could use a shaft collar. I've seen them used to help keep belts on top of a Hans. Go to http://www.mcmaster.com and search for "shaft collar."

You could also get your belts re done so they have a bolt attachment at the back i had my belts re webbed and changed my hardware from bolt in to clip in. He also built me a custom window net that was absolutely perfect. $$ were very low as well much cheaper than buying a new set.
He re-webbed them and re SFI certified them local guy for me but accepts shipping etc..

Migs, not sure how much work you want to do, but do an archive search for posts created by me, my rollbar has nifty little harness holder-in-thingies that work great. You could fab up something similar and even bolt it in if you wanted, as it's not really a structural part.

If thats what you are talking about, that looks great. Ill probably have to do that mod. It looks more permanent. I would have better piece of mind doing that than something else, not that anything isnt any better or worse. Thanks sscguy!

Those are cool but I just used some spare zip ties.

My Dad taught me that zip ties, duct tape and hammers fix just about anything

Rick has posted the only correct response so far. The bar slide should be as tight to the harness bar as possible thus making it very difficult for it to slide on the bar. Zip ties on either side help a little but but in my street car I have them mounted as mentioned above. In the racecar I also have zipties but they are there from the previous owner and I left them in when I put my new belts in.

That's my solution.

With most of these solutions, what's to prevent the harness from sliding to the side in an impact? How can zip ties prevent this?

I was wondering the same thing. Are the belts zip-tied together or something?

The zipties are wrapped around the bar itself to act as a colar to hold them in place. They only come slightly in contact with the belts and if the belts are properly installed and under tension they should not move left or right and should not be able to work their way over the zip ties.

And that actually works? I'll have to look at your car next time I see you, Zephyr. And I do have my harnesses set with that 3-bar slide thingy all the way against the harness bar (though in that pic they're not adjusted or anything yet)

I had used the zip tie idea for several years but used the ties to hold the belts together- from sliding too far to one side. My seat also has the holes for the shoulder straps to go through so this only really helps when the belts are slack.

I have installed some shaft collars last year which should work better to hold the belts from sliding to the side.

I was having issue with my outside upper harness strap sliding around the bend after installing the kirkeys and some spare zip ties worked well to keep it inplace....didn't move all HPDE weekend. Think I will go ahead and zip tie the inner ones as well.

Yeah...I need to fix the loose ends on the harness.

NO. Read the NASA CCR or SCCA GCR for the proper installation of a harness. http://www.sparcousa.com/resourceFiles/36.pdf Sparco outlines how to mount a belt. the CCR goes over it further in depth.
