Default Help Identify this B20B with P8R

Im picking up this B20B longblock from a friend, according to him the Head has a P8R stamp

and a '97 Stamp like this

obvioulsy its not a 99-00 JDM B20B that puts down 146 whp
is it at least the rare 1998 B20B out of a Orthia that is 9.2:1 comp that puts down 142hp?

Thank in advance, I'm knew to this Non-Vtec game

Use your metric tape measure to see if it has 33mm IN valves or 31mm. Of course the P8R casting marks might be a clue.

the issue is Im going to buy the motor off of him and I really cant just take it aprt to check the valves and pistons. I really think its the 9.2:1 compression motor or at leats i hope so because im getting a good deal on it

edit: sorry I borrowed thos pics from Hybrid Vtec to illustrate the head stamping

My real question is did the JDM B20B's that came with P8R head have 9.2:1 or 8.8:1 compression?

Seems to be a P8R motor that came out of a 98. 2-Layer HG? The only way to tell what pistons are in it is to pul off the head. I could see it being 9.2:1. If the JDM B20's are 9.6:1, then the P8R head could make it 9.2:1 since the combustion chamber is larger(84mm).

Sorry for the late response. I was out watch NCAA football all day, then Christmas shopping. If you want to take a look at it or have some questions, just drop me an email.

the back of the block is stamped P3F and it has a 2-layer head gasket so im pretty sure its the rare 9.2 motor. Ok well atleast 142 hp is alot better than the 126hp B20B's

If you need me to chip an ECU to use programs like Crome or Uberdata, let me know. Far cheaper than Hondata and Church will tune with those programs.

Uberdata and Crome are free to download.

The chipping kit for the ECU is $15

Chipping the ECU ranges from $50-$80

Atmel 29C256 EEPROM's are $6 ea. Hondata sells the same chip for $25 ea. Thats a rip-off!

The 99-00 motor that puts down 140 horse is the B20Z not the B20b

nope your wrong, in japan there is no B20Z only B20B

The 99-00 JDM B20B also shares the higher compression PHX pistons like a B20Z giving it the same comression

I dont think so, you really shouldnt boost a lot on O.E. B20 sleevs because they are to thin. O.E. pistons can handle what I want easily if tuned correctly. I really only plan to boost 8-10lbs fully tuned later. Looking to get aroud 270hp reliable for daily beater use.

Those heads are nice just for the simple fact that it has the same size intake valves as a vtec head

When I had my B20VTEC, I pulled the head off the stock JDM B20B, the head was a P8R and the pistons in it were P3F, the low compression ones, mine was a 97/98 as well. Soooo the only real way to tell is yank it apart.

Well if you look at the back of the block by the where the rear L bracket mounts it has PHX or PRF engraved. Mine regretibly has P3F stamped, but it looks to have a 2-layer head gasket

270 whp should be easy. A buddy of mine back home made 277 whp on a stock USDM B20 with a Drag Gen kit(T3/T4). This was about 4 1/2 yrs ago too. I forget if that was at 8 or 10 lbs. of boost.
