I bet you've never had this problem before: won't go into 2nd (ON DOWNSHIFT ONLY)
Yup, this is really weird.
'00 itr Tranny has 68k on it - about 60k with a 4.9 final drive.
It shifts like butter - and I've tracked and autoxed it quite a bit.
Down side? For some reason it doesn't like to go from 3-2 on a downshift. It just won't go into that gear. The problem pretty much goes away when the car is warm - but when it's cold it's a BITCH!!! I have to double clutch it to finally get it to go in.
I was just wondering what causes this... bent fork maybe?
No other problems to speak of - in fact it shifts like butter otherwise, but damn if I can't get it into 2nd on a downshift when it's cold.

I've noticed that mine won't go into first on a downshift if I'm going more than 30. Oh well.
So... no 2-1 @ > 30
So... no 2-1 @ > 30

That's normal, Honda built safety measures to keep you from fuxoring 1st gear.
Ken, I've never heard of that kind of problem...

Yea... I know. Just seems like it would be more fun if it would go to first to rip it hard without having to nearly stop. Wait a minute... second gear pulls hard enough, I don't even need first. There's the answer.

Sounds like a syncro issue to me. Rev match all your downshifts, your drivetrain will love you for it.

Hmm, won't go into second when it's cold....the first and only thing that comes to my mind is Italian cars. Alfa Romeos and the older (pre 360 modena) Ferraris are notorious for this problem. Trannies are fine once warm, but you can't put it into second when the car is cold.......downshift OR upshift. (yes...you have to go from 1st to 3rd).
Sounds like the synchros to me, that seems to be the only logical explanation.
hope this helps

I always do - and heel toe accordingly.
To no avail, it won't downshift to 2nd when cold. upshifting 1-2-3-4-5 is fine in every situation, warm or cold, and even dragging it.....
I'm due for a tranny fluid change - so maybe that'll make it go away...

Was the tranny properly shimmed when you installed the 4.9? I had a similar problem when I had a socalled freind install the 4.9 he didn't shim or measure anything. I had shimmed by a shop who had the right tool and its fine now.

You shouldnt need to change any shims when installing the 4.9, unless you are changing bearings as well - but it is always good to measure clearances before putting things back together.

Penzoil? Which one? </TD></TR></TABLE>
If you get it from a local parts store. Like advanced auto then it is penzoil syncromesh. In a yellow bottle over with the gear oil. It says penzoil syncromesh. Alot of people run it. It helped my tranny out a significant amount. I have used it for several years now with no problems.

There is a pic of it there. Also I forgot to tell you that quaker state is the same thing also. If you look in that link it has the part numbers and everything. Let me know how it goes or if you have any problems finding it.

Clearances were double-checked with a feeler gauge upon install of the 4.9.
The weird thing is that it didn't do it this morning - I suspect because it wasn't that cold last night. It's definitely temperature related.....
Will try the motul fluids and report back...
