Default HOW TO: Install 94+ tranny internals and factory LSD into a 92-93 YS1 cable clutch case

I just finished this project a month or so ago and wanted to do a writeup on it since I couldn't find a complete one online.

Here is it.

Feedback is welcome.

Thanks

Steve

Good job dude. It's nice to see someone adding positive stuff to this site.

What shift forks did you end up using the hydro or the cable?

Thanks for the feedback.

I used the shift forks from the s80(hydro) transmission. I believe they are identical to the ones in the YS1 transmission but i cant be 100% confident that they are since i no longer have them side by side to compare.

Thanks for the update.

I worked on a YS1 trans that had B16 guts in it. I added the ITR diff and GSR ring gear. I didn't build it though I bought it from a speed shop that was confused about what they were selling.

When I was looking at your pics, I saw those fins in there. They were kinda evil and took a while to get rid of. I didn't want to add aluminum chips to my trans so I used a very sharp chisel and scored the fins before I broke them off. When I was done I had almost no chips.

I think the sealed bearings are later model stuff. I ordered 01 ITR diff bearings. Damn they were expencive.

I picked up a 2nd YS1 trans here a while back and I am going to put a few weird ratios in it from a hydro trans. My goal is to build a semi wide ratio trans that has good highway RPMs but will keep the engine above 5000rpm after every shift.

Right on, I thought about trying to break them off but instead i managed to tape up the rest of the tranny nicely and then cleaned it thoroughly after.

Im confused about your statement about bearings though. What did the 01 ITR bearings look like? I dont know what year of s80 tranny i had but it had to be 94 or 95. Thats the one with the cone bearings, the YS1 was the sealed style bearing(which is an earlier model, unlike what you said above.)

The earlier bearings are the two piece ones called tapered. One half has the rollers and goes on the diff and the other half has the race and it goes in the housing.

The late model bearings were sealed one piece bearings that look like the bearing that is in the center of your flywheel. I used the sealed ones because something I read on this site said that they don't need shimmed like the 2 piece ones do.

After re-reading your last post.... I'm not 100% sure. I do know that I used 01 ITR bearings and they were sealed. I'd read on here that the late model cars had them. Maybe before a certain year you might find either style or maybe your YS1 had someone in it once before.

This site ----> http://www.acuraparts247.com/s...e.jsp
gives part numbers. Maybe after a look around we could figure it out.

Steve;

You should have used pieces of clay to verify the clearance between the fins and the diff. Kind of what is done when checking valve clearance between valves and the pistons.

What you would do is go by an art supply shop and buy some modeling clay. Take some and put it along the fins and then install the diff. Remove the diff and then you can see how thick the clay is after being "crushed" by the diff.

You wouldn't have to bolt the case back together unless you also do grinding on the fins on the other case half.

I believe that the grinding also has to be done on a non-LSD diff. It's a function of the gear size that leads to it. The gearing you are putting in is (once again, I believe) 4.77

(no problem on using the photos, but please include my name at the link. Ya, he did ask first for anybody wondering)
