Has anyone built an off road kart?
Forget my turbo pocket rocket idea, this is what I want to do. I was just wondering if anyone has made one and if they had any tips or pointers. Did you use plans to build yours or was it all off the top of your head? These things must be a blast to drive.
a friend and myself are looking to start building one soon....
here's a helpful link i found

SAE Mini Baja. The only thing is they're powered by tiny Briggs and Stratton engines that you can't modify.

This site will tell you everything you need to know, and if you cant find it on the site, order a set of plans for $48 and then you'll know everything. It shows you how to build everything like the steering arms, spindles, etc. instead of paying big bucks to have the stuff machined. There fairlay simple to build as well. Tubing bender and notcher and a welder is about al you need. Good luck!

8th place at West, 5th place at Midwest, and 2nd place at East. Endurance results were 3rd at West and East, and the win at Midwest. Our design scores blew *** the whole year, just couldn't get the presentations right it seems, hence the 8th and 5th. Total for the year, 3rd in the world (ETS, Michigan, Auburn)
As for how we faired against the canardians, they drank our asses under the table after every event.

That's actually where I got some of those pics from my initial post. I may order a set of their plans to get me started.
Is there any way to make a reverse gear while using a street bike motor?
Also, what kind of notchers is everyone using?
and for this project, would you recommend TIG or MIG?

Yes, but it's very hard.

Mill, table clamped notchers (check HF), grinding wheels, die grinder for those odd angles

TIG, but you can pull off MIG cheaper, especially if you go 1020.

hahahaha thats cool.
They should have the teams run the baja 1000, with those little things, start um last or around the bugs of course so they wouldn't get ran over.

At an average speed of 28 mph, we would finish the race in 35.7 hours, with no extra pitstops or broken parts. That's 5.7 hours past the official time limit.
There are maybe 10 teams in the world who can hold that average speed for more than 4 hours. So that's 10 teams who can fail that well.
It would be ******* awesome to attempt though.

For notching...buy some steel...and build what I did. There was no way I was paying $550 for a bender that I could easily make at home. Its "my version" of the JMR Manufacturing notcher(www.jmrmanufacturing.com).
I got tired of not being able to notch the angles I needed with the harbor frieght one I had, so I scrapped the base of it and used the rest of the pieces for my newer notcher. I realize the vises and the bronze bushed guide sleeve isnt the greatest but I figured the notcher is easy enough to make, that when they wear out, I will order the nice ball bearing guide sleeve, and the better vise.
Heres some pictures:

Good Luck!

Here's another source of excellent buggy plans. He also offers detailed plans for all sorts of fabrication equipment.

I'm a die hard miller fan, and the 200 is a step up from the 180 we use, which I love.
If you're going to buy a TIG welder, that's a damn good one to get.

I agree. I just spent a month welding on a 200DX in a class and instead of getting a used Synchrowave 180 I'm saving up for the Dynasty.

I didn't realize it was floating at first. I thought it was just riding through deep water haha, that's awesome
I've had one guy recommend the 180SD over the Dynasty but you guys say go with the Dynasty. Hmmm, decisions decisions...
