My roomate was puttin around downtown today when all the sudden there was a loud noise coming from the motor, then just died. Long story short, tows the car home, pulls the head off and the #1 cylinder has a broken valve. The valve broke off at the stem, and I do only say 1...none of the other ones dropped, no contact or anything but the one that broke. I read an old thread saying how carbo build up can cause them to crack, but these valves are fairly clean. The head is shot, it cracked the cylinder wall clear to the bottom, and of course the piston is shot. I'll post some pics up tomorrow morning, but if anyone has any ideas that would be great. He was only drivin maybe 30 mph when it happened, and wasn't rompin on it before. Thankyou for any help fellas, appreciate it

The retainer looks fine to my knowledge, I'll check for sure tomorrow.
*edit* Yeah, from what I can tell it looks fine. They are Omni retainers.

Riight, it must be the omni retainers that caused the failure
to bad they are an excellent ti retainer. To the original poster were they the stock valves that came with the head? Sometimes stock valves fatigue and just let loose, how many miles did the head have on it? It sucks about your friends motor

Well, the valves were stock, but didn't have any carbon build up on them at all...just a little dirty. They came with the motor, was a first gen B16 so who knows how many miles were on it when he got it. When he first swapped it it ran like a champ for over a year, and then he decided to do this build. When he pulled the head the block looked really clean, could still see the cross hatches and the pistons were way clean. As far as the Omni retainers and what Hella was referring to, it kinda seems like some of Omni's products have seem to be going downhill as of lately. But I checked the retainer and it looks good. Thanks for the simpathy Matt

damn that sucks.... im about to put some m22s in my head with stock valves that i have had for 120k but lot of people say that stock valves are okay and are actually pretty tough so i decided not to get new ones. any other info on the motor and how it broke?
14-15 year old valves, I think they did good. Got a fracture in the last street race, over-rev and finally gave up the ghost. Waiting on my 14 year old LS with 185,000 to drop something.

Really, do valves eventually become just old and brittle Don?
_still waiting for Ty to bring the digi cam back so I can take some pictures_

Anything made of metal or composites has heat cycles and motion cycles. A valve can only go up and down so many times before failure. The more spring the larger the cam motion the fewer times untill failure.
Every time a rod or valve goes up and down is a cycle, think of torqueing your head or rod bolts 50,000 times.

I doubt he's gonna want to repair it. I'm sure he'll just find a used one and run that. The head isn't ported as of now, so I think that might be a more cost effective way to go. Be on the look out for me fellas, the head doesn't hafta have the vtec solenoid, distributor, cams or valvetrain. Mainly just wants the caps and bridges and no stripped or broken studs, thanks guys
