Why do the full-race manifolds use mild steel flanges?

Just curious about this.

Dont quote me on this but I have been told that it has to do with the expansion of the metals due to heat and mild steel is a better choice for it not to crack ?

Thats gay. I hope there is a good reason for it besides saving costs.

 

Stainless expands alot more than mild steel when its heated. Thats the advantage of mild steel.

hmmm what about expansion cuts wouldnt they help???.... this is a very good question to be honest. any solid proof of this?

 

There is no question that stainless expands more than mild steel. Because of this it also warps a lot more when welding. Using mild flanges just makes fabrication easier.

 

And its really not that big of a deal, unless you want the bling factor. 3mm material thickness in mild steel tubing and 8mm flange is strong enough.

i need to give a tip to anyone using stainless.

for the bolts, if you go with stainless bolts DO NOT PUT THEM IN DRY. USE THAT SILVER ANTI SIEZE CRAP&gt; good till 1600f. i had 2 stainless bolts GALL to **** in my flange, i had to re drill and tap some ****. sucked ***!

thanks for the insight muckman.

we use mild steel head flanges for a lot of reasons. strength is the #1 reason. Also, once the manifold is finish welded, the mild steel can be worked with far better than the stainless. If you need the mild to become harder, you can heat treat it immediately after welding... you can work with mild steel to make it do whatever you want it to do, soft, malleable, ductile, hard, whatever you need to can make it happen. Stainless always acts like stainless.

Why weld? Just machine the primaries and the flange out of one billet piece

Geoff, your responses in this thread have made me lose alot of respect for you and your business. That's disappointing.

 

Geoff, everyone has a shitty day now and then, but do everyone a favor and stay off the message boards when you do. You seem to have trouble distinguishing between a curious customer and someone trying to slander your company.

 

this thread is a direct attack at Full Race. It could have been worded very differently if it was just an innocent question. Why not just ask why they use mild steel instead of stainless. Why does money have to play a role in your initial question. Geoff has made such an effort to help and advance the industry. When you dedicate so much and someone blatantly attacks your integrity, you too might come off the same way...

 

I think he's just writing enough so that people don't put words in his mouth. I tend to do that, so I know. Better to look like a jack-*** than a cheap-***.

Honestly, I think he has a right to say what he did, since price is always gonna come up when it's full-race. J Olsen could have also sent them an email with the question instead

By using mild steel for the flanges, you are much less likely to crack a stainless header because you dont have the flange pushing and pulling at the individual runners. That is where most of the stress you see that cracks headers originates from. The flange expanding has a good moment or torque on the collector causing cracks.

Another good thing to do is cut the flanges to give each head flange pad room to expand without moving the others.

I posted this because I wanted to know more about this. Didn't want to start a bash fest. The reason I brought money into this is because that is what everyone that uses SS flanges says. They say you cheaped out on the flange if you didn't go SS, which I think is BS.

we use mild steel flanges becuase we like them more. mild steel is a better material in our opinion. we think we know what we are talking about, some think we are arrogant ******.

its too bad you guys only see what we post and have no clue about whats going on behind the computer screen.
