Oil Burning -- Acuras range for 'normal' usage?
Does anyone know what is Acuras range for normal oil usage?
My dealer told me losing 1 quart per 1,000 miles is within limits.
Anyone know if this is right, or if theres an official range?

I dunno because if I drive really hard, I will burn around a quart. But every 3,000 miles you should only burn a very small amount AKA less than a quart unless you have modifications or a problem.
1000 miles and a quart does not sound overly bad but I would be worried about my rings and what not, and more than likely get it checked out. But as you know some of the guys in here burn oil like crazy and the engine is perfectly fine.

One quart per 1000 miles is the most oft-quoted figure, but I'm not certain whether it comes directly from Honda or if it's just become the agreed upon standard over time.
My car was always very well maintained and never abused, and my consumption rate was normally around 1/3 - 1/2 quart per 1000 miles, depending upon how it was being driven. I should also note that the engine didn't smoke, compression was fine, and it ran very strong.

WOW that's amazing

That quote from Honda seems a little high. Especially for a stock motor. I go through 1 litre of oil between oil changes(every 4000kms). I do not track my car but drive it fairly hard

I have experienced very similar consumption. Both the C5s I've owned drank about the same, both put down pretty strong numbers when dynoed (~165 at the wheels), no leaking or smoking or anything. Mechanically sound and all 100% stock. Both are somewhat higher mileage from 65K-almost 90K now. An older B16A I had also had very similar consumption with unknown # of miles. This is using Mobil 1 10w30 and sometimes 5w30 and changing oil after every HPDE.
Dave-ROR said that Honda stated that the B18Cs do burn oil, not sure where he got that information from though.

damn j00.. this oil threads never end.. there is no official range, and its not normal to burn oil.. if engine in tact, you shoduln't burn/loose any oil.. period. you can do oil test, check all seals for leaks, compression/leakdown if its really bad. also, don't use energy concerving oils like mobil 1 5w30, choose something with higher HTHS, does this occur more often in the summer? then you may need to use thicker oil and synthetic..
in the meantime, make sure to never run out of oil, its fine to overfill by a little bit (like 2-3mm) over the dot if its really that bad..

Maybe for an S2000 I would presume. I think that's a little high, but if it wasn't burning oil progressively (more and more), I wouldn't lose sleep.
Somehow, my '97 consumes about .5 qts every oil change interval, which is in the neighborhood of 3-5,000 miles. It's Mobil 1 too.

Yes, exactly.
I believe that figure is also often used as the standard (official or agreed-upon) for most other manufacturers and their cars.

Even if you think you are burning no oil--you still probably are. What happens is that the oil that is burnt off--gets replaced with raw fuel that gets past the rings--so your oil level stays the same--or even INCREASES.
Im pretty much stock engine and my car burns around that much, maybe even a little more. But im also 3rd owner so god knows what the other two did.

I've worked for Acura as a tech for 6 years and can verify that 1qt / 1000 miles is within acceptable range under certain conditions. Thinner 5w30 oil will naturally seep past rings easier than heavier oil weights- also high rpm lift throttle rev down will also pull more oil past the rings as well . 10.6:1 is pretty high compression compared to most other Honda vehicle and the factory posts these tolerances to the technicians and service departments of both Acura and Honda dealerships.

My old 95 integra se burned oil like a mother so i paid 1500 for a new engine and now it burns 1 quart every 2000 miles or so. it pisses me off that i paid so much money and i still have to pour oil into my engine every 2 months. acura are suppose to be better than hondas but they are still crappy to me. my friend's toyota has over 500,000 miles and he does not have any oil problems at all. his oil is a nice yellow and stays at a constant level. i don't know what to do and i don't want to pay any more money.

My R doesn't burn a drop of oil so I say you're wrong.. ACURA makes great engines.
:hsugh:
About your Integra and the two engines.. both were used, right? Did they come with maintenance records? What kind of miles were on them?
