ATS vs STOCK...
Yesterday was a beautiful day for a drive, so I went out to Lotus's house (in the boonies) to bring his tools back to him, and do a little "testing". The back roads of Abatsford are strait and deserted, so no flames please.
His car: 2001 ITR, Stock, full interior, 30 lbs of undercoating, ~20k kms
My car: 2001 ITR, 7lb fw, ATS fd, H&R sports, motor mount inserts, no backseat, no spare/jack, no rear wiper, no wing, ~12k kms
Now keep in mind that we dyno'd our cars back to back a few months ago, and he only had me beat by 2 whp and 1 tq. Also neither of us have alot of track experience, we are not professional drivers.
We did several runs, probably around six Some from a roll in 2nd, some from a standing start. We traded cars about halfway through. In every case but one we were DEAD EVEN. The ATS would pull on stock at first, but then it would run out of gear. The stock fd seems to take advantage of the the fact that there is more power in the higher revs, and the ability to remain there for longer gives it an equalizer. Only on our high speed run (we only hit 5th once) did the ATS shine. In the middle of fourth I pulled on him hard. Interesting, huh?
Even in leu of these results, I would not do anything different. The fd/fw combo makes my car more fun to drive, plain and simple. Makes the R feel like the animal it should. As Lotus said when we stopped to talk, "feels like a CAR now!". Hopefully Lotus will provide some more feedback here.
Is it faster? Maybe. Does it make it a better car? YES.
ATS=

Well you could have knocked me over with a feather... Driving the cars back to back Dr Poofaces car felt WAY quicker.. But you know how it is is street confrontations ( puts on flame proof suit ) whoever gets on the throttle first pulls the other guy.. When we got around a couple of corners droping into 1st gear with his car behind me, he would pass me at a walking pace.. and he always seemed to be on my rear bumper when we blasted off a stop sign... so I expected to lose the impromptu drag race badly, but we switched cars and went head to head.
I think I probably got the hole shot ( LOL ) and I thought I might have traction problems with his car, but it was very controlable. His motor mount inserts are very noticable, and the tires were very stable on the road during the initial wheelspin compared to my car... mounts alone are a great mod IMO.
We got away basically together and his car felt like it was pulling significantly better than mine, but we stayed almost bumper to bumper rightup into third gear, where I THINK I was starting to pull on Pooface a little... but by then I was in 4th gear and he was still winding out in third.. when we shut down we were still basically in the same position, and really it was a draw...
I think only a proper back to back timed drag race will tell the story, but for track use I think the ATS pulls way harder in the midrange, so it would clean me up. Without exception every time we came off a corner I felt his car was crowding me, and the couple of times he passed me when I was ahead of him tells the story.
No doubt about it though, the gearing changes the character of the car for the better.. It really rips, and it is even more like a motorcycle. Just as a side note I will definately be putting the GSR 5th gear into my car ( wife is laughing and saying not bloody likely in her car ). In the upper gears the acceleration is evened
out a bit by everybody's torque dropping off, and I don't envy Dr Poofaces drive to Michigan for the ITR Expo with his stock 5th gear..
And thanks for the test Dylan.. that was fun.. Now I just have to work on the wife!
I will as soon as I can get more then 20 miles on mine. Hey vegeta, if you want, when i pick up my car, you can meet me at the dealer and you can take it for a spin.

ok cool, count on it. any ETA on the completion. I know you will get a new short block.
remember naples acura serive does not suck, the district manager is only slow
once they get on the car, they do a great quick job

Gonna let him spin the bearing this time?

Seriously, I put up some very detailed info on my install and impressions.
We actually did some local 3rd and 4th gear pulls on the hwy to compare this weekend - jdm final + bolt-ons vs. ats final + spec b's. The results were surprising.
I'll let somebody else post up the final results though.....

No ETA yet, yea I know the service rocks. Bob, the service manager is a kick *** guy, but he can only do what the district manager tells him. I do have a call into corperate to get a new short block, so I'll find out what the deal is after they call me back. I'll let you know when I'm picking it up and maybe we can grab lunch also or something (it'll be a weekday so I can buy some crap from Mr. Mike K while i'm there).

you can drive the Toda B type R, and I will drive the ATS beast, i bet with the ATS you will pull on me

I'm still going to try no GSR 5th. If Black R is right, what's another 500 rpm's?
Any other thoughts?

Hmm....and Black R says no Problem..

on one to one.. at say 4000 rpm that would add.. . wait.. only 440 rpm.
So 500 rpm IS about right... but in practice it makes the car quite frantic over 70
mph... Very noticable...
Could just be Poofaces car compared to mine cause I got lot's of undercoating and he has none, so his IS way louder inside anyway..

and any numbers for JDM FD and ATS FD on drag strips? (I know straight line is not everything, just want to know how much faster in a straight line)

So LOTUS and DR POOFACE both give the ats a
over stock in a drag race?
my b16 tranny needs some help to get my b20vtec down the track

no body with new fd's has mentioned the speedo beeing off? I changed the rear end in my supra (went from 3.83 to 4.40) and my speedo was whacked untill I got a new speedo gear to match the fd... is it the same on our tegs, or is it diferent because of fwd??
