loud ticking noise from engine
background:
96 integra rs 155-160,000 miles
new timing belt and other belts about 5,000 miles ago
its a loud ticking noise that i can notice from inside the car when i am next to antoher car or something for the sound to bounce off of.
it ticks at idle and when i rev the engine the ticking increases. kinda like a baseball card in spokes.
any suggestions on what it could be? i havent gotten a chance to look under the hood to pen point the sounds spot. if it is something like the head or values, any suggestions on how long i can go with it like this?
btw i did a search, but most seem to not fit the noise its making.

sounds like it could be a spun rod bearing..... try this, with the engine running, disconnect each plug wire one at a time, if the knock stops when you pull a certain plug wire, then it is a spun bearing
Valves can make ticking noises, but I'm not sure if valves in need of adjustment would make loud ticking, or how it would change with RPM. Post back when you figure out what it is.
yea, i have the same noise coming from the right side of the engine
2000 gs 90k had timing belt , water pump & all drive belts eplace then valve adjustment then the noise started. would like to know also any help would be nice...

could be that your valve lash is out of spec. That means that the valves are hanging a little bit low and coming into contact with the piston on the upstroke. Try pulling the spark plug wires, if it keeps making the clicking noise and it sounds like its coming from the engine then you should get it checked at a dealership or if you know what your doing its not too complicated to do yourself.
valve lash is pretty easy all you have to do is get a book from the dealership on the make and model of your car, a feeler guage, a flat head screw driver and a 10mm wrench. it will explain how to do it in the book. i think the specs are 0.006in on the intake side and 0.007in on the exhuast side. good luck
ok i just went out to my car on my break and it isnt making the noise now. so its only when its been running for a while.
a co-worker said it might be low on oil and it is. i have a small oil link that i have known about for sometime. so i checked it and it is very low.
now my question is would my engine make a ticking noise if its low on oil?

LS motors don't have LMAs.

YES! please take care of your car. Fix the leak, add oil, and if the ticking is still there, Go buy a feeler gauge and readjust your valves again. The ticking is coming from your valves. It's not a rod bearing, lifters, and def not lost motion assembly! Just bad maintenance... good luck, keep her happy

no, the piston is still moving w/o spark plug, just no combustion. I don't see how this could work to diagnose possible bearing issue
Yes low oil will make an engine noisy. So will out-of-spec valve lash. Even Hondas can be unreliable when not maintained properly.

um... autozone,sears,advanced,home-depot. Feeler gauges are used for everything. theyre like $5. All you need is a flat head screw-driver and a 12mm wrench. The LS motor uses 12mm lock-nuts and the valve seats are much higher in the head and much easier to access apposed to the vtec head which require a specially fabricated 10mm wrench. Trust me, it's really easy. Just have a friend help twist the screw driver as you slightly feel for any resistance one the gauge blade. It's cake. I'v done it by myself in less than 30 mins on my ls motor.

ok this might help pin point the problem some more.
the ticking noise seems to only do it when the car is in drive. (i have an auto btw). but not in park or in nuetural.
any suggestions? tranny maybe?

Is it just the position of the gear shifter that matters? In other words, even if it's not moving but if it's in gear, it'll make the noise? What about reverse? Can you tell where the noise is coming from? You might try getting to an auto parts store and buying one of those mechanic's stethoscopes (looks kind of like a doctor's, but at the end it doesn't have the round piece, it's just a metal stick) to try to find where the sound is coming from. Or, if you're gangster, grab a broomstick, put your ear to it, and poke around (I've never tried this, but I've heard some old school mechanics do it). Either way, take the end (stetho or stick) and touch it against diff parts of the engine bay, tranny, etc. and try finding the noise.
