CUSTOM TURBO for my LS...Finally decided.
hey turbo guys. I need some help. I have decided to go with a custom turbo setup for my stock 97 Acura Integra LS. I have chosen a turbo from a eclipse (name other possibilities) with an intercooler from a starion/conquest. I need an intake manifold right? What else do I need for this to be done? I am very new to this and maybe starting something that will take me a looong time. Let me know what exactly I need and approx. how much i should pay for major parts. I am going to the junk yard this weekend...wish me luck!! Otherwise it's off to ebay for the parts I'm missing. Thanks
Also, when at the junkyard, suppose I see a turbo, what should i look for on it? To make sure it still works....spins freely, etc.

Yeah intake manifold is needed. Bah, damn newbies.......
1) You want a turbo off of a 1st gen dsm, its bigger
2) You can use either a dsm or starion/conquest intercooler
3) You need a turbo/ex mani
4) You need a larger fuel pump and a fmu at a MINIMUM
5) You need intercooler piping, 2.5" should do nice
6) You need a helms manual
7) You need lots of tools
8) You need to become friends with your local muffler shop
9) You need some sort of downpipe
10) You need to take a look at some turbocharged honda's first hand to see where everything goes
11) You need to do some more homework
12) You *should* just buy an off the shelf kit, it'll save you 10,000 headaches
13) You do NOT need a new intake manifold

BWahHAHAHAHAHAhAHAHA ! You have no idea what you are getting yourself into !
Judging by your current knowledge, I will tell you something that you will remember for a long time: Turbo is expensive (but hell yeah it's worth it !!)
Non Turbo guy: I wanna go turbo !
Turbo guy: Yeah? It's expensive...
Non turbo guy: yeah, it's expensive, I know ...
Turbo guy : Uhhh... no, you don't know... believe me, you have no idea !
The best advice I can give you right now is: Do major research before you end up spending money twice !
You've started in the right place, Honda-tech, the best honda/acura info resource on the net !
Also, the best place to get flamed or in an arguement !!
Good luck !
X2's ***** of the day: LS longblock for sale ! Great for turbo !

thanks for the help guys, going to the junkyard this weekend...hehehe. Can anyone get me a list of major stuff that i cannot do without, then i will slowly start to acquire all the parts. After I am done, I will let you guys know again. I am relying on my friends and h-t to help me with most of this. thanks!
tomakit made some very good points. also throw in a tial wastegate, and make SURE you have a boost gauge on there before boosting. that was my mistake which has cost me thousands of dollars and eventually led to me going all motor...and i really loved the turbo. do as much research as you can on this board, and make sure you have some kind of engine management. detonation will cause unbelievable headaches, an endless hole in your pocket, and make you wonder why you ever tried to go turbo.
i wouldnt call it a CUSTOM TURBO,more like GHETTO TURBO,just save up and buy a complete kit from rev hard, drag, greddy or whoever, will save lots of time and headaches
So you're saying that because he's using a junkyard turbo that his turbo kit is ghetto?

Hmm, my turbo is from the junkyard and I dont consider my kit to be ghetto. it's been running for over 2 years without any problems at all.
yeah there are a lot of people using CUSTOM turbo kits out there. I think building your own would give you an advantage over shelf kits because you know what u did and how you did it. If u choose to go shelf, good for you, but don't come here and say what i'm doing is ghetto. I do it my way, u do it yours.
this is what you need:
-you need to learn more about building a turbo set-up
-you need to learn more about turbos
-you need to learn how to use the search option on this board
-you need to save money and buy a better turbo
-you need to go to the bank and get a loan to save yourself the trouble of building yourself a disappointing turbo kit
OR... you can just keep posting more questions so we can help you and prevent yourself from blowing up your car.
AND... dont get butthurt off our sarcasm.

The main thing you need to do is learn about your car and learn about how a turbo system and all of its seperate components work to keep the system running correctly.
i dont know too much about turbos but this might help you out....
when searching a junkyard for turbos try looking for 1985+ T-birds and merkurs. they have the T3 48a/r or 63a/r ex housing.if not the 90-94 mitsu/plymouth eclipse/laser has the tdoh5-14b turbo which i hear is pretty good and upgradable to the 16g. while you're taking that mitsu turbo out grab the blow off valve too(make sure its metal and not the plastic one). those are about your main ones that you can easily spot in a yard. as for intercooler you should get a 85-89(88-89 are better) chrysler/mitsu conquest/starion intercooler. if you really want a huge *** intercooler, look for a u-haul looking type of truck called an Isuzu NPR. fuel is a big issue in TC cars so getting larger injectors would be a good idea, look for the TC mitsu eclipse they have the 440cc injectors dunno what yr (do a search). piping is real easy to get just go to a local muffler shop and pick up some.
hope this helps ya
