Three years, three motor rebuilds......does anybody know what they're doing anymore?
I am creating this post for the simple fact that i've spent over three years building my b18c-r, and every time I try to have the engine built......I get screwed. I've spent thousands of dollars, gone to four different shops which have (or had) great reputations, and still no luck.I'll refrain from mentioning the shop names cause you bastards know who you are. It's one thing or the other but the main issue is my bottom end.
No one seems to be able to put it together correctly. I don't beat on my car when I get it back.....I break it in properly it just does'nt seem to work out for me at all. My setup is nothing extreme at all,(see sig), all I want to know if there is somebody out there that knows what they're doing, and can help me out. I have the $, just need to know it can be done correctly.
I'm at the point where I almost want to give this all up. I love my Honda just as much as the next person, but there is only so much that my wife will tolerate, and I think i've reached her limit. No matter how much I try to tell her this will be the last motor rebuild, it never is. Is there any body that can help me out? Thank you in advance.
NOTES: I will pay top dollar to get my motor rebuilt the right way.

I can tell you people in Virginia and Maryland who definitely know what they're doing.
I'm sorry I don't know anybody in Illinois, and I sympathise with your plight. Sorry.

I'm down for anything new, believe me. I 've also almost exhausted all the shops in here in Illinois.

What are your goals for your motor builds?
From reading your sig it says youve put down 195/126 which seems semi-impressive...
Maybe you should state what exactly you're trying to obtain with the next build, and then go from there....
Good luck with the next build

My new setup is in my sig. I just want someone to put some Spoon oversized pistons in the bottom end which are then mated to the Spoon rods.
From the latest crap i've been through.

If someone here is willing to build me a K24 bottom end with a k20 head filled with Toda goodies, please let me know so we can get something going. All I ask for when you're building the motor is to treat it as if it were your own....... seems pretty hard to find work like this as well.
My b18c-r will be sold and if you own an R, i'll cut you a deal. IM me for details.

King Motorsports is only about an hour north of Chicago. Give Clayton a call and discuss the situation with him. And before anyone chimes in and says they're too expensive -- their labor rate is only $60/hour.
My motor has approx. 90,000 since they built it, and it's still running strong as ever.

I'm well over 15k in motor work alone. None done correctly so far......all at my expense as well.

I was just going to recommend them.
DanGSR is also a great guy, and quite knowledgeable. Talk to him and see if he can help you isolate the problem.
OT: Thanks for the trouble shooting at EXPO5.

Never ordered anything or dealt with King Motorsports, but have heard of the good work that they provide. i would definetly give them a call and tell them your situation. Although you do have a lot of spoon in that engine, maybe have them throw on a few Mugen parts
but seriously, call them

This is the reason about 10 years ago I quit letting anyone touch my stuff. I purchased a long block for my K20 when it had a 350 in it. I had to replace it twice with warranty exchanges in less than a year. After that I found a good machine shop and then assembled the engine myself after re-measuring all of their work. That engine is still going strong even though it was replaced with a big block in my K20.
When I purchased my ITR from a relative it had a blown motor and I would not dare let a shop put in a new one. I used another reputable machine shop and assembled it myself after measuring all of thier work. That was 30,000 hard miles ago and it is doing fine.
The neighbor kid blew two engines in less than a month when he had a turbo installed on his Civic. Most of the work was done by a local shop in the Dallas area-including the tuning (Hondata). In my opinion the work was poor and was rushed and he paid the price.
If I were in your position I would find a machine shop that does work for racing companies-not necessarily Honda-just someone who does the work for local drag racers or circle trackers. I would then buy a book and learn how to build an engine myself. If you are uncomfortable with that then I would watch the machine shop build it and ask a lot of questions. The shop may not like it but your being there will ensure every step is done right. I know there are some very good shops out there but I also know that no one cares about your stuff as much as you do.
I do have to add a disclaimer that I am licensed as an aircraft mechanic so I may have more training than the average reader-however what I had to learn to get the license was just an overview of how the different engines operate...I still had to learn how to work on my cars just like anyone else would who is interested in knowing.
I hope all of my rambling at least helps in some way. It sucks to give people money expecting a quality product and have it fall apart on you. Good luck.

why are you having the motors rebuilt? low compression? burning too much oil? spun rod bearing? just curious, maybe it might help though to know

Sorry to hear about all your trouble, but I was at your point after my 1st motor issue. I wish you the best of luck and there is always the DIY method. I for 1 can accept my own mistakes/mishaps and it seems no matter what you'll be paying for new parts or paying someone to fix it.

Agreed. I have nothing but good things to say about King. They built my B18C-R, and it ran like a champ for a year and a half til it got jacked.

If you have the cash, I would definatly trust kingmotorsports, or some of the big dogs.
However, I also learned the hard way with some of my previous cars. I absolutly will not let any shop touch my car. I feel so much better that I have done the work myself. Its really a big part of "owning" a car. The only downside is that if you mess something up, you have no-one to blame but yourself.
I would suggest doing some homework, and taking your time to do the job properly.
Famous quote: "if you want something done right, your gonna have to do it yourself"
Good luck with the re-build, and I hope things go right for you. At least once!
