no vtec still.
grr.took my hybrid to the track and it was a dissappointng day.
17.2 best time.
its a jdm b16a w/ intake and header. 94ex coupe with stock wheels in front @ track.
changed oil today
4 quarts. full on the diptick.
ive pulled the solenoid off cleaned it. checked continuity between ALL connectors and ground. there is conituity between the swtches.
ANYONE have an idea?????? HELP

also: my oil light comes on when the car is cold but goes away ~1minuet of idling.
could it be oil pressure not causing vtec to kick in?
(yes the car is FULLY warm when i try taking it into vtec)

no CEL (related to vtec, getting o2 sensor code cause mines broken)
im not going to keep adding oil because soon there will be too much. over 4qts now.
im hoping its my oil pump.
and i just changed my oil today. thats why i posted this....

What ECU are you running? Does your JDM B16A have a VTEC oil pressure switch on it? I know JDM Type R motors don't have one, so when you run a P28 you have to add the whole VTEC oil pressure switch to the motor.
Vehicle Speed sensor can affect VTEC too - no codes whatsoever besides O2?
Anybody confirm/deny whether the second gen B16A has the VTEC oil switch on it? It usually sits next to the VTEC solenoid. My pal's second gen had one, but you never know with JDM stuff - Honda does weird stuff.

I would go after the CEL first, cause aside from cutting off the vtec it's probably retarding your timing all the way back. No matter what code you're getting it could be causing a problem. Also I don't know what viscosity oil you're running but I would not go any thicker than 10w30.I prefer synthetic it may be a little pricey but not as pricey as an engine failiure. Hope that helps.
has VTEC stopped working or has never worked?
VTEC will only engage if the coolant is warm enuf, the road speed is more than 20mph and if you are reving over about 4000-5000rpm.
maybe a sensor is bad? should be a code though...
have you taken the valve cover off? is there oil in the top of the head? could be a blocked oil passage...?
just some thoughts.

vtec has never worked (just swapped engine in, 600 miles max)
10w30 oil. just changed it. i know vtec wont work unles the coolant is warm enough
ive reset the ecu and let it idle till radiator fan comes on then take it for a drive and still no vtec. i even tried the solenoid off my d16 motor and it still dosent work.
the cel should be solved tommrow the o2 sensor is shipped.
thanks for the replys. anyone else?
i should NOTICE vtec kicking in right? like a gsr's? i mean it goes through 5000 smooth, there is no power gain, no louder noise. the car dosent kick at all. i mean even in my d16 i could feel it pull at 5000.

hmmm, is there no other codes?
you WILL hear VTEC
trust me, i had the same problem casue my VSS connection in the dashboard was bad (code 17)
when i heard VTEC for the first time - mate, it was great!!!
is oil getting to your head????
is your tacho working?

when i get the o2 sensor tommrow ill start troubleshooting
and yes the tach works fine.

thats what im thinking.
what could cause that tho?
i just tested my solenoid (power wire from battery to power on solenoid, it clicks) its good i think its the oil pressure

Im just wondering why the **** someone would go and beat on there motor when they are not sure that everything is mechanically up to snuff. If the VTEC isnt functioning, there is something wrong. Take it to a damn professional man, your obviously out of your league.
You might want to check your oil-pick up too. I've seen cases where the oil-pick up was dented so bad that was restricting oil-flow. After replacing it, vtec worked fine.
there was a guy on hybrid who had this same problem with a crx with a 1st gen b16. everything worked fine. no codes, he changed solenoids, it clicked and all. i think it ended up just being a really bad head and the rocker wouldnt engage. has this head ever engaged into vtec? do you have any way of checking the oil pressure? does the solenoid click when the set rpm is activated for vtec?
ok First. out of my leauge? **** you. if i had money coming out of my *** i would take it some place but i dont. im a college student with a crappy part time job. its not like i took it to the track and did 15 runs on it till i hit the rev limiter. i did 3 runs. i havent been into 5000 since then. Ive never been in a b16 equipped civic. ive done gsrs, h22s etc etc. never a b16. so im curious as to what it would feel like. thats why i posted that. Dont tell me i dont know what im doing.
anyway.
thanks for the ideas guys im going to test the oil pressure through the solenoid and see what happens from there.

Who the hell are you jackass, Slowerthanu has been a member for a lot longer than you have, I can help, I told him to take it to a professional so they could diagnose the problem and get it resolved. Some people just dont like being told the truth. If it was a bad oil pickup or rocker arm, more than likely you wouldnt even be running let alone at the track. Look man, dont get all pissy with me just because I told you how it is.
