92 Prelude engine cuts off/Speedometer works sometimes
Im a newbie to the maintenance of cars do xcuse me peeps...I have a 92 Prelude 5 speed. When you start it up and you are driving there a few times the car just dies. It mostly dies when you come to a stop. Can anyone give me an insight as to where i should start looking.
Also the speedometer works sometimes, you will be driving and it will stop working then it will come on again then stops. sometimes it wont even work then out of the blue its starts again. Help!!

look through the threads there are already posts on both of these....
as for teh speedometer i have the same problem, its more then likely a poor connection somewhere or a failing speed sensor.
The sensor is located on the back of your tranny and a new one wil run u about a bill from autozone, or if u live in the San Diego area go to the Honda-Acura pick-a-part and u can pick one up for 50.
As for the other problem, is the car warm? how low is the idle?
check your ivac on your throttle body it may need adjusting/cleaning, once again there is a long thread on this exact topic

hope it helps

I will look through the thread to see what I find. Thanks!
The car is warm to the normal level .... The care Idles really low also....like almost 0 RPM when warm all the way.

I had the same idle problem on my old Prelude. Sounds exactly like you described.
- First I checked the intake manifold for grime, and it was perfectly clean.
- Then I had a shop replace the idle adjustment. I say "replace" because there's a wax pellet in there that holds the adjustment and it's not supposed to be touched. You have to replace it when you make the adjustment.
- I think they also looked at the IACV (idle air control valve) and it was clean too. That's sometimes the problem.
- I think they also checked the function of the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation valve) and decided it was fine.
None of these things solved my problem, although they should be the first on your list. This problem is very common to 4th gen Preludes, and these are what is normally suggested. There are a few more things I might have checked, that you can check too:
- Check for leaks in the brake boost system. If the car dies when you come to a stop, it might be because the brake boost vacuum isn't sealed. The brakes are vacuum-assisted and it puts a load on the engine.
- Check your ground wire connections. For some reason idle depends on your electrical system being well-grounded, and these connections (from the battery to the chassis) can get corroded and weak. Some people install aftermarket ground wire kits that ground the battery directly to the engine components and bypass the chassis, thereby eliminating some electrical resistance. However, the stock ground points should work fine if they are clean.
Hope this helps!
