need help with cleaning the engine bay
okay, i'm a newb and after doing some search of how to clean the engine i have a few question to ask. do i need to be concern with the battery and all the electrical connectors? should i let the engine cool off first before doing anything to it? can i drive the car right after cleaning it or should i wait and let it dry? is there anything eles that i should know when cleaning the engine? any help will be great. thanks.
yea, deff. dont drive the car before washing the engine let it cool, unless you like runing the risk of cracking your bolck, cover the Dizzy and if you have a open air filter cover that, and its fine if you spray the battery, i wash under my hood about 3 times a month and no problems and thats all i do to prepare
I've never done it before nor do I claim to know anything about the subject but this is what I'd do:
Cover up intake filter, battery, alternator, dizzy and any exposed wire pins with plastic.
Spray the **** outta the bay.
Maybe simple green it?

how about the alternator since ctu brought it up? also, i keep seeing dizzy, is that slang for the distributor??
You forget that all of this stuff gets wet when your driving in the rain too... the alternator will be fine. Your trying to protect it from pressure. I would use some plastic bags and elastic bands. Cover the distrubutor and its wireharness well. I would to the same with the shock tower connector harnesses. Thats basically it. I would let it cool before you did it, and wouldnt drive it immediatly after. ESPECIALLY if you use Gunk or some other sort of degreaser. Good luck!
ive heard a little different. Ive heard its much easier to remove grease if it is warm. And people do not drive their cars after, but they do let it run w/ the hood down to evaporate water.

Can you back up your statement about the block cracking?
Have you ever drived in the rain? Do you think your block doesn't get wet in the rain?
Exactly.
You're not going from extreme hot to extreme cold.
To answer the original question, cover the fuse box, battery, alternator, distributor, and spark plug entrances. Spray SimpleGreen all over and let it sit. Pressure wash down, but keep it light around the main electrical components to be on the safe side. Apply more if needed. Dry with a towel.

The foamy gunk engine cleaner from the parts store advises you to foam and spray down the engine bay while you have the car running. I've done it several times and have yet to see any sort of cracking.

alright running, and running doesnt mean hot as ****, like i had said, dont go drive around or get back from something when your car is hot, let it cool to warm, but i dont care go drive around for an hour and spray ice cold water on your engine and try it a few times and tell us some results
