radar detector stealth install
I hope this isn't more of an Audio / Security / Video question, but I am curious how any other prelude owners have hidden radar detectors.
It looks like if I get a unit with a supplemental display (i.e. Valentine 1), I can hide it either behind the clear plastic by the fuel guage or down in the change holder/ash tray so I can close the door on it if necessary.
I am wondering if anyone had any clever ideas as to hiding the actual unit itself. Putting it above the mirror is pretty inconspicuous, but I know someone around here probably has a really ingenious solution they figured out.
Anyone?

The reciever must be in an unobstructed area...Putting it by the rear view mirror will hamper it's abilities as the tint will absorb most of the radar waves...

Yep. so unless you're in Virginia, you're radar detector isn't illegal. Therefore, unless for cosmetic purposes, mount in on the window

This is/was in my Integra, but it'll give you a good idea. (Just noticed that these pics are from '02
)
Two things to note:
1) The main v1 unit is up by my rearview mirror
2) The remote display is behind the clock blackout plate - when the car is off, you can't tell it's there.
pull the clock out:
Then take the guts out:
Now take your remote display and duct tape (use duct tape cause zip ties won't work here) your remote display to the clock cover:
Run the wiring like this:
from behind the clock, to where the cluster is, like this:
Daylight is where the opening for the clock is...this shot is from the cluster:
Now run the wiring down to behind the stereo to the module/connector thing supplied by v1...:
Put everything back together, and it'll look like this:
now, go have one of these:
Enjoy.

On the 4th gen...i've got the remote display mounted on that little black strip that separates the tach/speedo from the rest of the wraparound dash. I'll take pictures sometime if you want.
the integra part was pretty cool, but we dont have that clock opening on the preludes. i kinda wanna know where it can be hidden too because that last speeding ticket didnt look to pretty.
Yeah, I live in Georgia where detectors are legal, and I don't really speed like a jackass either. I do speed, though, and I figure if I get pulled over and the cop sees the black box on the windshield, he will be a lot less likely to be lenient with me.
I figure having a radar detector in the car is bound to make the cop think that I speed frequently, you know?
I had seen the integra install for the remote unit before, and I have to admit its pretty slick. I was thinking in my 4th gen, I would put the remote unit either where xthephilx was saying, or even better, behind the smoked plastic, so it was pretty much invisible (like people do with the lcd screens).
I was really asking if anyone had thought of a good way to put the big box itself, though. I saw pictures online of an M5 with the unit hidden in the cloth headliner, but that won't work for my car as it wouldn't be able to "see" through the vinyl headliner in the lude.
Thanks for the suggestions so far, keep them coming!

With the V1, it's just one wire and pushing the clip on the top and the unit comes out. Then chuck it under your seat and you're in the clear
And yeah, I plan on putting it behind the smoked glass sometime, but it's harder than you think. Take a look back there sometime and you'll see. It's very cluttered.

For the V1 to work best, it needs to be placed as high up on the windsheild as possible. Mounting it on top of the rearview mirror hides it somewhat. They're the same color, and looking from the outside through the driver/passenger window you can't tell it's there at all.
The best part about the install in the integra is the location of the clock. It's so close to the windshield that you never have to take your eyes off the road to see the info - it's almost a HUD.
If I were doing this to a Prelude, and I will be, soon, I'd get an integra clock assembly, re-use the plastic covering and build a small plastic box to house the remote display in. Then I'd integrate this as best I could to the top of the dash, dead center. When the car is off, you just have a small black box sitting on your dash.
I've seen some where people mount the remote display behind the rearview mirror glass, it's super stealth, but hard to see while driving, imo.

Detectors are definately legal in CA.
I've got a Whistler remote unit with front and rear radar antenas, and a laser receiver mounted on the rearview mirror. I don't think the performance is as good as some portable units, but it's completely out of the way. The head unit is just fastened down to the steering column.

if your looking for a remote system, i purchased a escort srx radar system, by far the best investment you can make, no messy strings coming from the windshield, unit sits right infront of speedo cluster, and it has 3 triggers in the front of the vehicle, and one in the rear
