What cams were you running, did you gave titanium retainers, were the springs shimmed and propoerly installed? Was the motor overrevved?

Not heard tell of this before, but more info would be helpful i.e. cams, retainers, etc.

What ecu are you running? Where is the revlimit set at, and when you say the car was not overrevved where were you shifting at?

Both times that I had valve train failures it was with stock retainers.

And you are not the only one to experience this by a long shot. It is fairly common with stock Honda retainers. They don't seem to like any extra seat pressure from aftermarket springs.

I was thinking that you overrevved your setup, but in my girlfriends ITR equipped GSR I set her redline around 9300 rpms and take it regularly to 9k. Thats not to say that you cannot drop a valve from taking the stock ITR valvetrain that high, but it is unlikely. Maybe the retainers and keepers were worn?

Perhaps that is the answer, I have no experience with stock retainers with aftermarket valves... Upgrade everything this time.

Really?
How come Toda reccomends stock retainers with their springs?

I don't know, I have never had the inclination to buy Toda springs and probably never will.

Do they make their own retainers? Their website has sections for titanium retainers, but the pics and descriptions for that section only talk about and show their springs. If they don't, my guess is that they don't want to recommend a competitors product.

The truth is, it doesn't matter what Toda says. There have been numerous examples of factory retainers breaking in half when being used with aftermarket springs. Rocket, DonF, and other engine builders will all tell you that the factory retainers are the largest weak point in the Honda valvetrain.

Oh BTW, can you even use standard retainers with Omnipower springs? They are designed to be used with the Omni snap-in retainers. The factory retainers do not employ this design.

Don't know why I didn't think of this before. Must be the hangover

Edit: I have just been told that I am right, you must use Omni snap-in retainers with Omni springs.

You can but it is recommended to get the omni retainers. Considering they have the snap design, I would only run them with the springs and retainers.
