Difference between JDM 96 Spec and 98 Spec ITR engine?
I wanted to know if there are any other differences between the 1996 jdm itr motor and the 1998 jdm itr motor other than the header.......because 1996 had a 4-2-1 header correct, while 1998 had a 4-1 header. If anyone knows any other differences please list them and/or explain:
(Also is there any differences in torque/HP between the 1996 and the 1998?)

98 Spec has slightly more torque in the midrange due to the CTR intake cam.
98 Spec has a CTR intake cam.

....I kno we had the intake and exhaust cam from a 2000 itr motor...and next to a ctr intake cam the itr intake cam we had looked virtually the same....anymore stuff?
Actually the small increase in torque is due to the all stainless steel header that was introduced on the 98spec R:
96 spec:
200ps / 8000rpm
18.5 kgm /7500rpm
98 spec
200ps / 8000rpm
19.0 kgm /6200rpm
another interesting fact:
weight:
96 spec 2336.9 lbs
98 spec 2425.1 lbs
even though the added weight of bigger rotors and ABS as standard equipment on the 98spec R, they both tied in the quarter mile run at 14.207
as for the track..... The improvements to the 98 spec R gave it the edge:
-better braking due to the increase in rotor size
-better speed out of the "hole" due to the slight change in gearing and final drive ratio

anyone care to add more to this... I can't remember every little detail and the video I have at the moment only has the major improvements... Although Spoon ECO states that the upgrades on the 98 spec motor are compatible with the 96 spec motor

So it's just the header and the intake cam? What about the tranny. Difference between 96-97 and 98-01?
Is the CTR cam that significant of an advantage?

The 96-97 itr tranny as a 4.40 final drive like the usdm itr tranny, the 98+ jdm itr tranny as a 4.6 fd I think.
ok here it is. i have the movie so listen up. the only diff in the motor in the 98 spec r are the headers and the ctr intake cam. the tranny has a diff final drive where the 98r has a 4.75 final drive and the 96r has a 4.40 final drive like the usdm. the usdm type r is basically the the 96 spec r motor and tranny with the 98specR suspension and brakes. i didnt think there was a diff with the ctr intake cam and the 00-01 itr intake cam but i guess there is and thats why i got it in my car, with a jdm header and a jdm cat.

So 96 spec itr cams and 98 spec itr cams are NOT the same? What about 96 CTR cams? Are all 96-00 ctr cams all the same?

Your right about the 4.40 but the 98+ has the 4.785.....The best motoring dvd "Type R Legends" walks you through whats different from 97 spec to 98+ spec. In the quarter mile there is absolutely no difference what so ever.

dont forget that the 98spec trans has the longer 4 and 5 gear (same as gsr).
