Default ***NYS Inspection: how to pass... heres my thought...***

UPDATE ON PAGE 2: nothing big, just wanted to inform fellow NY'ers with this problem, that I did in fact pass today with this method.

If you are supposed to be OBD2 but swapped it out for OBD1 , you are in trouble, (i am) as many of you already are aware of this. So how do you pass?

The only way i can think about getting a sticker that will work and is legit is this...

First of all i hope you saved your OBD2 ecu. Because apparently, the ECU stores the vin number in it.

Ok ...

Step 1) Find a shady inspection station, or make a friend who inspects cars.. One of my good friends happens to be an inspector

Step 2) Find someone with a stock integra, civic, whatever car it is that YOU have, find someone with a stock version of it, and make sure its going to share the same ecu as you, (obd2a 96-99) or (obd2b 00-01)...

Step 3) put your ecu into their car

Step 4) go down with the car to the inspection station with YOUR registration also.. Now the inspector will scan YOUR registration. SO the NYS already thinks its your car, then when they run the ecu testing bullshit on the ecu, the failsafe is that its your ecu. So all the info that is on it, is yours such as your vin number.

Step 5) pending you dont have any CEL's saved in your ECU then that portion of the test will pass. Why? because it just did the test on your ecu.. plain and simple.

I have not personally tried this yet. But i will. And my friend who inspects, tells me this will definately work.

If there are any inspectors reading this thread, please post your thoughts about this.

Sounds Logical, I think... is that all they use to scan for info? I've never dealt w/ OBDII. Bump for getting some more opinions.

yea registration and ecu are the only objects they can physically scan. so those 2 objects must be from your car in order to make this work.

I would suggest change the ecu a couple day ahead of time to make sure everything is running correct

wouldn't it also be possible to just locate the power wires going to the OBD2 ECU and connect it to the OBD2 reader so when you go in and they plug into the reader it actually reads your OBD2 ECU which isn't actually doing anything and just thinks that the key is turned to the 'run' position? Cuz if it can't read mileage or anything then it will just store whatever it was shut off with.

If you "know a guy" to get a hookup, then why bother going through all that. There are easier ways to get your obdII teg passed while running an obdI ecu. You don't even need the other car to be a honda, much less a teg.

or so I've heard

well, you should have thought about this a little further before modding a street car.

well at the time, it was ok to swap to obd1, there was no inspection test for this. As of this year, they changed the inspection laws for 96 and up cars. So this is the way around it.

Yes because we are psychics knew that NY was going to pass legislation allowing for stricter emmisions testing.

How about if you did this:

1) Keep your stock obd2 ecu, buy a obd1 edu chip it and run that all the time. Then when inspection comes around, u swap back in the obd2 ecu (i dunno if switching back and forth between ecu's would work if you have a turbo teg or something)

2) What if you have a greddy emanage or something as a piggyback on the obd2 ecu, will that pass inspection?

when did this change in the inspection law/procedure take place?
cause I just had my 97 integra inspected in February, and they inspected it the same way they did my 94 teg last year.

Sometime last year the law was passed. All inspection stations have to have the new equipment and performing the new inspections by April 1, 2005.

that is the best way. hands down, me and a friend in the city talked about it for about an hour, the vin number IS stored in the ecu and the reader DOES scan it and match it to the registration.

an easier thing to do, is just have a copy of your registration sticker, go to the dmv and request a duplicate inspection, and when they go to scan the reg, they can simply scan the sticker, so only one car has to be there.
