B18b1... Is this Right? I cant get my TDC exact... Please take a look and help
I am weeks away from dropping in this b18b1 into my eg civic. I have just about everything I need. I put new seals, gasket, studs, water pump, and timing belt.
Now, I am having a lot of trouble with the belt. I cant seem to get the TDC to line up when the cams are at 12oclock perfect. It is about a half inch off, but if i try to fix it by adjusting the belt over a notch, It goes a 1/4 inch in the opposite direction. I have OBX cam gears for future tuning, which are both set at 0.
Here are some pictures, will someone give me some feedback.

Thnks in advance for your comments

Sometimes stupid **** like this happens...since its on an engine stand, pull it apart again(timing belt) get the crank to TDC, and look down the #1 cyl hole to make sure it really is TDC. Then put the belt on, follow a haynes, helms or chiltons manual, they are very specific and give pictures also...its not hard to do, just make sure its done right...last thing u wanna do is blow it up or bend valves...Hope i can help

Also put the stock cam gears on just to see if u can get it in time...then if u can get it in time...go head and put on the OBX gears...just had a brain fart on that one
if i'm not mistaken on the top side of the cam when they are at 12 oclock there should be holes you can stick a screwdriver in to keep them in place and to help make sure they are in fact at 12 oclock, should be located right behind the cam gears just a bit then just line the crank up at tdc and it should work with no problem. hope that helps
Good call SSP, the hole will line up in the cam, through a hole in the cam caps.
I guess I can put the stock gears on and try to get it right. Is it possible I have the wrong timing belt or something... I am getting real aggrivated. Also, would a 1/4 inch make a big difference?

definitly try with the stock gears, wrong belt is highly unlikley if you got it at a parts store brand new but anything is possible, 1/4 inch off make a diff., maybe-maybe not?

OK, i went back, and tried again. I put the old gears on, but it made no difference. I Then put the obx's back on, and once again, no difference... Is there any reason for this? I am so confused.
Here are some recent pictures. I have the crank at TDC, but the gears are not perfectly alighned.
Do these gears look to be alighned enough to run normally? Will the difference make a difference?

Please help, Im lost.

No way.
You want the inside marks point right at one another.

What should I do? How can I fix them so that they line up... Its not a matter of slipping the belt over a notch... there is something else wrong. I am lost. anyone else think they can help?
yea i thought on the DOHC engines the 2 lines on the gears were supposed to be pointed towards eachother in the middle soooo the left ones at 3 oclock and the right at 9 oclock
someone correct me if im wrong

What do you mean? I have never heard of that on a honda motor. Even the stock gears have the 12oclock arrows, and the woodruff key is at 90 degrees.
Im certainly not an expert. I do need help.

It looks like the intake cam is off by a tooth.......With that said why dont you slide the belt off with the crank lined up with the mark, then line up the cam gears and slide the belt back on...........Its as simple as that. Basically just move the intake cam clockwise until it lines up with the exhaust cam, which is about a tooth off. Then everything should line up.

second this!
second this!
Take the belt off the cam gears...put the screw driver in the cam hole so it wont move, when you have them lined up, put slip the belt over....make sure u loosened the tensioner bolt so it will lose tension...this really isnt that hard...about the waterpump, any bseries will work as far as teeth go...

No.....only the B-series vtec waterpumps will work. Non vtec waterpumps have a different number of teeth
