i had a cold air in for a lilbit prolly 5 days and 2 days ago i was driving to my friends house and my car was stalling, it has done it before in summer from my intake getting wet, i do not have a bypass valve and i do not have wheel wells so im in bad shape, well i guess the melting snow and water on the road decided to jump into my car somehow, well it died and we couldnt start it we tried everything, i knew my distributor needed replacing so thats done, we towed it to my friends house and now it still wont start, ive converted the intake to shrot ram, ive cleaned the filter out by drying it and using a air compressor and hose to blow all the dust n other stuff out, ive used starting aids and even charged my battery fully, i really need help with this cause i dont have the money to bring it to a shop, i know im going to replace the timing belt but i dont know if thats the problema dn if it is im screwed!!! any suggestions ill try im not that bad with working with these things also how bad is a missfire for your engine that could be a problem with my car too and if its bad sh!$ fu*& im screwed lol any suggestions and help is gladly apreciated thanks

does it sputter? and try to fire?
3 things you need for car to run air, fuel, spark
air is given, so no worries unless you have a squrrel in your intake mani
fuel, open your throttle body and smell (after you cranked it a few times)
spark:
take out spark plug wire, stick a long screwdriver in the wire, hold it close to any ground point, or any metal on the engine (slose to, not touching, like 1/4" away) make sure your not touching the car wiht your body, or you will get shocked, have someone crank, if it sparks then your
if not, you have problem
if it sparks, set cams to tdc (i say cams because every 2 rotations on the crank is 1 rotation on the cam, so you might be 180 degs off), open distributor, look at where the rotor is pointing, put cap back on, and thats your number 1 point . put wire#1 there, and clockwise, put 3, 4, and 2 (firing order 1,3,4,2) then vroom, it should start

ok so heres the deal im attempting to run to the store adn get spark plugs, wires, and isopropyl mixture for the gas, im praying this works but i do not know yet, i also was wondering if anyone knows how i set my timing back to where it needs to be, i have the wires in the right spots on the distributor so no misfires thank god, thanks for the help
the car will not start, i can almost get it to turn over but it wont keep going, im doing a compression test when my friends father gets back with the end for my car and some spark plugs and newer wires, after that i have no ideas cept its the timing belt and im screwed that is too much money for me right now
the crank pully has 2 sets of markings on it
1) one mark
2) 3 marks
using a timing gun, connect the pickup to spark plug #1 (closest to cam gears, farthest from transmission), start car, point at crank pully, watch for dots. turn distributor to match...
you want to set your timing at the 3 mark (not top dead center)
i think its like 15 before tdc or something liek that
oh yes, make sure your cam's are tdc too, so your not 180 off
if you cant access a timing gun, have someone try to keep the car running while you turn the distributor (when you do this. make sure your not reving the engine too high, or the timing will be advanced, and it wont work) till it runs decently, u can get it pretty close by doing this, because the car wont idle if its too far off. if it idles, your less than 5 deg or so away from perfect and at least you can drive it
sounds like your almost there
