IHRA = Sport Compact?
Taken from CompetitionPlus.com http://www.competitionplus.com....html "We keep hearing rumors the IHRA has secured backing for their new sport compact series and this one definitely is not a family oriented sponsor. However, it's the perfect fit for a demographic that is made up of testosterone-filled young men. (3-1-2005)"
It's called Street Warz, I believe 15 events.
If it has been explained to me correctly, it is more of a lifestyle event, less emphasis on the racing. More street-legal based classes instead of Pro classes.
I am not sure who CP is referring to, I know Kuhmo Tires is one of the main sponsors.

I also heard it is sponsored by Penthouse magazine and clear stupid channel radio. I was invited to this yesterday:

Me either. It's already bad enough listening to the radio at the shop and no matter what station it's on, you're generally going to be hearing the same 5 songs fifteen times a day for three months. But on top of that, their promotion and seclusion of different recording artists, and everything you hear about them in the news.
I think if another sanctioning body like that starts up, they will have minimal sucsess. It seems like they're starting it for the lifestyle and they'll learn about the racing as they go. Lame-o.

To me this is exactly what you need to make a new series work. If you have the radio stations as sponsors rather than having to pay for advertising, it is a much better prospect to getting people to the event. Who cares about the company as long as they would bring in attendance and increase interest in the sport. You are going to get a lot of free advertising through that areas most popular DJ's, not just radio ads that people tune out.
I personally like the idea but I am not sure where the series is going to go. There are a lot of ways it could go bad but a lot of ways it could go right. I will be watching with an open mind.

I am going to say this even with NOPI involved in the post.
NOPI was a lifestyle company and did lifestyle events. The IHRA and NHRA were founded as a drag racing organization. If this was NOPI trying to get involved, I would agree, but the IHRA is a drag racing based organization.

I think it is a good first step but I guess that some of you don't. I see a lot of ways this series could go bad and I am just going to watch it and see. I am doing my best not to pass judgement too soon.

It would be a good step, but there are other places to race, and some choose not to support a sponsor based on the values and practices of a company
Just like most of hate ClearChannel, some people would refuse to race if Penthouse sponsored it I'm sure for their own ethical reasons.
The racing is diluted enough as it is.

Right now, Penthouse is just a rumor but it does seem be pretty solid. They have sponsored a funny car before and have a history in drag racing and motorsports as a whole.
I agree that the racing is diluted but maybe a new series will force the **** series out and/or force the current series to get better. I just want to see Sport Compact racing get better and with involvement from companys that can get you the advertising that you need and some that will at least create a buzz would be a good thing. Maybe some just need to think through how much of a good thing it is to have two vary large corporations involved in this sport. Two corporations that have a lot of pull, know how to market, and know how to sell a product. If the rumors are true, I think it is a good thing for the future.

bringing PENTHOUSE mag into the equazion..... will only further ruin the "RICER IMAGE" in most people's eyes....
i dunno..... i would be more appt to racing in a new organiztion, if i had more respect for a certain business/company........ how can you "respect" Penthouse?
what did the fast and furious do for the scene? anything but WRECK it ?

Actually I do get it because I just talked to the IHRA. It is not a national series, it is a local type series. It only goes to show that you shouldn't trust rumors...
BTW, are you not over your little personal BS with me yet? Jesus, let it go.

That is the website and here is the info from the IHRA directly:
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Chris,No, it's not a sports compact series. We are presenting 15 Kumho Tires Street Warriorz events across the United States. This is a street legal drag race for anyone who want to drive down the quarter mile in their street legal car, motorcycle or truck, surrounded by a large party. For more details, you can check out streetwarriorz.com.
You are correct. Our events are socially driven and all inclusive. The winner of our burn out contest in a recent event in Texas, drove his grandfather's Cadillac!
IHRA is not the organizer of these events; it is being produced by Clear Channel Entertainment. IHRA will continue to concentrate on their national event, Pro Am Sportsman, and Summit Super Series bracket world championship.
Thank you for your e-mail.</TD></TR></TABLE>

These lifestyle events' goals are to bring in crowds no matter what theyre into. The spectators can care less about racing and just want to show up to see DJs and cars shows, and thats fine with these organizers. (Nothing wrong with their purpose, theyre there to run a business)
But to really help the racing industry is to KEEP the racers that are already here. Alot of them(old friends and former customers) have left the scene because:
1. Financial situation(related to costs of racing)
2. They don't see themselves as having a place in the scene(too much competition in the classes)
We have to accomodate within to keep us strong and then recruit new guys coming into the scene to be as dedicated as we are. Thats the only way to make this sport grow.

The more buzz that is created, the more outside advertising that happens, the better off the sport will be. It wasn't until corporate america started to pay attention to NASCAR and now the NHRA did things start to take off. Look at the sponsors in NASCAR now, you don't see too many auto related cars other than very large companies like NAPA. The same is going to start to happen in the NHRA with a new line of sponsors coming in that are not automotive related (biggest seems to maybe be UPS!).
The growth will come when money comes and the series need to develop into something that grabs attention. Right now the NDRA is going a great job of that and the NHRA looks to be continuing to sit back and have the Powerade series do all the work for them. I would love to see the series combine and run a 15 to 20 race schedule and make the cars and drives the start of the show, that is what worked for NASCAR and the Powerade series...

I say if Penthouse has the money and wants to put the effort forth to sponsor a racing series, let them. Bob Guccione ran Penthouse into the ground and filed chapter 11. He lives in NYC still and was basically kicked out of his apartment, he is now allowed to live in one or 2 rooms of his old apartment (I really don't know how that all works) but I don't see him out in town anymore out at dinner when I used to see him a lot. Now Marc Bell own Penthouse Intl. and he is trying to make it into a Maxim style magazine. Clearchannel owns the monster truck racing as well as the IHRA and they are more geared towards putting on a show then putting on competition (at least with the monster trucks that is the case). I guess we will see where they ae planning to go with all this but one thing is for sure, they have more money than everybody else involved in the sport right now.
IHRA is so the organizer!

Spectator: $30
Racer: $50
Race & "full service" lap dance after winning the event from the barely legal division of penthouse: $150
I think the best way to sort this out is to sit back and see how it all pans out. I know they won't be coming to Bandimere. NOPI is too "Rated R" for the religious bandimere, I can't see him going for something sponcered by penthouse. Anybody else's tracks like this?
