The ALL-MOTOR Clutch Thread
OK, i found two lousy threads for clutches in all motor. I thought we should have a good clutch thread as a resource for clutch applications specific to all motor.
We usually deal with less torque and more of us have light flywheels.
describe the clutch model, the pedal feel/pressure, the engagement, and other characteristics you think you should include. I'll start:
Exedy/daikin "replacement" clutch kit for b16a (90-91 teg clutch). on a bone stock b16.
Had great very light pedal feel, engagement was nice for daily driving easily modulated coming from a halt. I must say though this clutch lost its ability to grab hard after about one week, though i didn't break it in right, it could only "skirt" the gears for one week

i have the exedy single disk organic clutch on my jdm gsr motor in my hatch. the pedal pressure is a little stiffer than stock, but no more that can be expected. it engages pretty quick and holds good.

fidanza 7.5lb aluminum flywheel, ctr n1 crank pulley.
jdm j1 cable tranny with cable-hydro conversion
goods - grabs nice and hard but not too harsh to start shattering drivetrain bits, revs up/down very quickly for revmatching, clutch pickup about 1/3 - 1/2 off the floor, not too high or low, just right imo.
mediums - stiffish pedal feel, can get tiresome in stop and go traffic but fine for normal driving.
bads - clutch chatter evident when the car is cold pulling from a stop, clutch will 'buzz' the inside of the pressure plate lightly if you push the pedal till it stops on the floor. not a problem once you get used to it though.

wow, surprising. somebody else uses spec other than me. i got used to the brand becuase of my toyotas. i love them. they are great. better than clutch masters and act imho. i have installed many of those in my friends cars, and driven them throughout the beginning from break in to broken in. nothing compares to the ride and feel of the spec. engagement is smooth as butter. i love it. but many people that have test driven my car think its weird and hard to drive. its maybe becuase they baby the clutch. i seem to not have problems. btw its a stage 3. stage 3 you have to rev match a little better and not hold the pedal in as much and you will be fine. like how you should drive anyway.

We've had some pretty good threads on clutches.
Somone needs to post up Clutch 101 by Rocket.
Is anyone daily driving the Tilton Single Plate?
I want to learn more about it.

or
ACT HDSS
The ACT HDSS costs quite a bit more, for any all motor application, it would be pretty hard to make these clutches slip.
Action 1KS or 1MD or 2MD or 2KS all are crappy in my opinion.
The 1KS will slip when it gets hot (and no, not because they are "High mile" clutches. Great for OEM replacement I guess if you dont plan to drive your car hard, I took one out of a 20k mile motor the other week, looked rather new.
The 2KS is fairly lame to drive around. Driving a 215whp supercharged R for awhile, it seemed to hold up decent, but still, after some use, it will start to slip, for how hard this clutch is to push, i'd recommend organic disc.
The 1MD is prolly your best Action clutch. It will hold down the power, but honestly, there are better options. I would MUCH rather get an organic disc that you can drive around and still beat the **** out of.
I personally think that the ACT HDSS is one of the nicest clutches. It is very similar to the Exedy clutch (we know why).
It has a little stiffer pressure plate than the Exedy. The cost however is almost double.
For ~230 dollars, the Exedy has near stock pedal feel and can take lots of abuse. Best item for the $.
A lot of people will swear by pucks, and some can be better than others in regards to chatter and what not, for all motor, I still prefer organic.
I see NO reason why any sub 220hp car should be really wanting a puck.
But, if you want some pucks, I would recommend the sprung exedy, seems to be rather tame on the road, plus you are getting rid of lots of weight. Their 3 puck is pretty darn nice on the street.
Just my opinion.

I'm currently using Exedy Organic Clutch w/ Findanze lighten Flywheel. Personally I don't think it grab's good enough for me. I'm Gonna go with a Clutch Master Stage 3. Hopefully it'll be nice
I'm not picking on you but have you ever removed your spec clutch since its install?
Spec is one of the worst clutches i have had experience with.. They will grab and hold like no other, BUT they destroy your pressure plate and flywheel after about 3500 miles of heavy driving.. They cut .020 groves into anything they mate with.. I have personally removed 6 of these and evey single one destroyed anything they came in contact with...Alexboy had one in his for like 7 k and it ruined his toda flywheel.. I still have a few of them and keep a spare one for emergencys at the track, but would never daily drive obn one.. These are all springless ones so those are the ones I'm commenting on...
I have run clutchmasters now for years without a problem .. stage 5 with flywheel...
From personal experience i would recomend Action clutches now(street car ).. I have installed 7 of them and a few have been in and out after 10 k for inspection, I have yet to find another clutch that holds up this well for a shelf style clutch...
Bottom of my list is Act , pedal pressure is way to stiff and i just dont like the feel of them compared to the rest.. Now i havent run any act that was manufactured in the last 2 years, so i wont rule them out yet..

Some people love ACT, and i never understood why... it is the shittiest, harshest setup i've ever tried (this is the extreme stage ?? unsprung disk/HD pressure plate)
We installed a Tilton multidisk last week... and let me tell you, you get what you pay for with that setup.
Action is really good, from what i've heard.
Competion Clutch is awesome. We had one customer come in with a Turbo ITR and he had this clutch, and from me personally driving it in and out of the shop, it felt great.
I personally run a Clutchmasters Stage3. (Sprung Disk) It's groovy

I agree, the ACT pucks are HARSH and shitty. Their HD pressure plate is VERY nice, and their Organic disc is very nice.
Dealing lots with exedy, ACT, Action, I can comment a lot about those three companies.
I cant comment anything about clutchmasters, never used one.
I still dont like action, I dont like their kevlar 1KS, it slips on any stock car after it gets hot. Their 2KS is just a bitch to drive around in, it has more pedal pressure than an extreme pressure plate from ACT. Their 1MD isnt a bad puck, I think that the sprung exedy 3 puck is better. It is a little lighter and has a smoother engadgement.
Hopefully ill get to install some clutchmaster clutches sometime.
Remember, these are just my thoughts. Some people love that on-off action that pucks give you and it doesnt bother them, I prefer close to stock without the slipage.

ive got a clutch specialties 6 puck, and "extreme pp" or whatever you want to call it......its strong as ****, and i daily drive it on a cable tranny and i love it.....its taken all the abuse i can give it.....and for 270 shipped for the kit you cant go wrong
I bought an exedy full face organic clutch for like 250 bucks. I ran it with a 65 shot of nitrous for almost a year on my B16. When i swapped motors we pulled the clutch and it looked brand new! Its in my B18C5 hybrid right now and still olding like a champ almos 2 years after i first bought it.
Its a little stiffer then stock, but 10000X more streetable then my old 6 puck sprung hub clutch of death. This exedy has NO chatter, and you wont have any problems with it eating up your flywheel like some more agressive clutches will do.
Plus its not a bitch to drive in traffic.

Tbone is so correct. I have, and had, a Spec clutch in my fairly stock B16b. The first one BLEW THE HELL UP with MAYBE 1 thousand miles on it. The preasure plate came apart at around 8,700 and put a huge hole in my case. The preasure plate broke in three different places and tor up the bottom half of the starter, DAMN near got to my differential. So
now I'm out a stamped lsd case and the labor to change everything over. Spec was really cool about giving me a free replacement, but to this very day I second guess it.....Spec DID admit to a defective preasure plate.....
