Default High HP D series, what is your timing >>

my motor is finally built, and will be putting it in the car this weekend.

anyway.

people running 300 + whp, what is your timing.

base timing on a z6 is 16, and y8 is 12 i think.

but what is your total timing in boost. i hear people running anything from 11 - 20 +.

anyone that has a successfuly built a D with no blowing head gasket, or lifting issue. please post your map or timing.

thanks

timing on a dyno wiil tell you were your making the best power and its easier to hear detonation, look into an msd 6btm or a good tuner

I have the same question as you. I will be finishing my build as well and will be shooting for around 300.

I think all us D series guys are a bit concerned with this head lifting issue which is constantly plauging us. I am curious to know what timing people are running as well.

I think the problem is that when people tune timing they tune to the threshold of knock then bring it back a few degrees. I've read many threads where they have experienced head lifting/headgasket issues and have no signs of detonation.

Maybe there is a inherent design flaw of the D-series block which require to run much less timing due sleeve shifting, 10mm head studs, poor r/s ratio, higher cyclinder preasure, or whatever.

I just want to know if we should tune to the threshold of knock then back it down a few degrees. Or tune to the threshold of the head lifting, but the problem is that how to you measure or quantify it.

Just thowing stuff out. I may be totaly off base but I just want to hear other peoples opinons.

Thanks again

detonation or not, alot of d series guys are blowing gaskets and lifting there heads.

i have hondata so 6btm will not be needed.

Dyno tune it to find out where it makes maximum torque. Thats your timing for that load/RPM.

running normaly timing on a D series pops head gaskets, and lifts heads. this method will not work

that post is what made me create this one.

he is not sleeved. i have heard that the sleeves is what causes this. so i might be ok anyway. but i would still like to know what timing is being run sleeved or not.

I seriously don't think the problem is in the block. I think it has more to do with the head and head stud size.

just let a good tuner do the job and you will be fine.

I don't know about the timing but I did hear about the sleeves shifting. I have been driving my for only 2 weeks now on 10 psi and so far no problems *knock on wood*. But the stock z6, well that is a different story. I had to race with my windsheild wipers on from the coolent spraying out everywhere..LOL!!!

I'm now running 18* total @14psi and 14* total @22psi+

Before I made 418WHP@22psi with a70shot 23* total

and 406WHP@28psi 23* total lost head gasket

None of this "dyno your car ****" , everyone who turbo D series knows we have head lifting or blowing Hg problems with out any detonations..so..lets hear from some D guys who are sucsseful with their setup and what "TOTAL TIMING YOU RUN" Asuming that your motor is built of course

this is what this thread was for . please keep info like this coming.

what turbo were you running and how much power did that put down. what about out of boost. just normal timing. or did you have 18 across the board.

If you guys really think it is due to the size of the head bolts themselves, I would suggest you do what the BIG hp B series guys do, and have a competent machine shop drill and retap the head bolt holes to a 1/2" stud in the proper length.

you're asking the WRRRRRRRROOONG board about this buddy.

i'm facing the same delimma (looking for 400whp on my d16z6) and i'm just going to take it slow with a wideband and J&S SAfeguard; keep pushing the boost until i'm happy or i blow sleeve to pieces
