Daytime Pics on Second Page!
Whats up everyone,
So awhile a go i got the bright idea to polsih my Fat Fives, since the clear coat was oxidizing and becoming cloudy, and also the paint was chipping in some areas. So I started on this lovely, sunny Saturday afternoon at about 12:00pm, and now its 7:45. So 7 Hours for one rim! yeah...... anyways
heres a pic of the Rim before, next to the aircraft paint remover.

Applying the green ****...

This stuff is off the hook! It took about 3 coats of it to remove all the clear coat.

So after the clear coat was completely off, i set up camp for the next 5 hours in a lawn chair with the rim ontop of my workbench (planter box)'

BEFORE!

AFTER!

I started at 300 gritt, 150 along the curb rash, then moved to 600, then 1000, then 2000, wetsanding of course.

I think im bout to light up the Q right now cuz im pretty hungry.

Mothers Polish to buff out the 2000 gritt scratches

Im pretty happy with the results, I think its a drastic improvement. Im gonna do another rim tomorrow, and the others whenever i can get time. haha.
Question: Does anybody know if it is safe to spray clear coat over the polish? I wasnt sure if the paint would stick to the rim.
Also, I want to buy new OEM center caps, so if anybody got a nice pair, hit me up!
Thanks for lookin

i use a dremel with a soft polish bit to work the mothers in. if i feel like hand polishing i use cheese cloth to really work the polish. keep going over the rim with more polish. as for clear coat you'll have to pull the polish off the rim by working it off with cheese cloth. as for a clear coat that works well, i havn't found one yet, it always ends up dulling it out.
duplicolor makes a clear wheel coating that comes in a spray can for around $4 at auto parts stores. i'm not sure how well it protects though...
looks sweet. one thing ... i have a 95 LS special edition ... those are the rims that i got when i bought my car. are they only gsr fat fives?

I am about to pick up a set of Fat Fives for my 96 GSR, I was thinking of doing the same exact thing. This was a very benificial writeup, take some day time shots, the night time shot doesn't do that wheel justice

i used to do frame polishing for motorcycles and to get all of the imperfected lines here is he sandpaper grit order 220,320,400,600,800,100,1500,2000. 220 is the most important because it takes the biggest lines away make sure that you see no lines after 220 or else you will have to starrt over. before you start on the other wheels go to the home depot and buy 3X paper by either norton or 3m it will make the 220 and 320 last longer so that you dont throw away paper every 30 seconds. good job and good luck with the rest of your rims

This is the first rim I polished. As you keep doing them you will get better. When I finished with the 4th rim it made this one look like ****. Get something electrical because if you doing all that by hand your fingers are going to fall off.
dude they look good i also have them fat fives on a 94 gsr and the clear coat is peeling to. Where can i get some of that aircraft paint remover?

This is what ive read, so i assume that you can just leave them and wax them. You could just remove the clear coat, then put it back on if your reasons for not liking the clear coat is the chipping/cracking/oxidizing.

any direction, it turned out that places like the lip and center i could only sand in one direction, but it turned out fine in the long run.

Many Tegs came from the factory with different rims than the traditional rim for that trim line.... Over the years while my Mom had her teg serviced I've seen tegs on the lot such as...
SE's w/ fat fives
GSR's w/ the sunflowers
GSR's w/ LS Mesh
etc....
