CA guys I feel your pain!
Haha I'm not in CA this shouldn't be happening =P On my way to an autox today and see a State Trooper on the median w/ a car pulled over. I'm going about 68 in a 70 zone. I pull into the fast lane to give him room and then back into the slow lane. He pulls out behind me and then pulls me over, here's how it goes...
Officer: How are you today?
Me: Okay.
O: Can you rev your car?
M: :rev to 4k:
O: That's illegal, in the state of WV you cannot install an exhaust that is louder than your factory system.
M: Okay.
- Officer leaves w/ my license and reg then comes back -
O: I've written you a ticket for an improper/illegal exhaust.
M: Is this a fix-it ticket?
O: You'll have to call the magistrate.
M: Okay.
O: Have a nice day and drive safe.
M: Okay, thanks.
- 5k clutch drop and I take off -
Haha okay so no clutch drop but just figured you guys would get a kick outta this since your always getting harassed out there on the other coast. The guy was being a jerk but I'm not gonna bother arguing w/ it. I suppose this d
I figure what goes around comes around and sometime something crappy will happen to him. Haha maybe I'm paying for something crappy I did to someone else
I called the magistrate today to find out that this is a $128.50 fine, that's more than most speeding tickets in this state! You can get the "problem" fixed and the fee is waved but hey guess what you have to show a reciept from a shop saying it was fixed. I could let some monkey put my stock exhaust back on and then go back and put my T1R on but I'd rather pay the $128.50 I think
Oh well, just wanted to vent, I was gonna buy a new lens but hey I guess I'll pay this BS ticket instead

That is actually worse than CA now because if the exhaust is decibal legal, you can go to a special station to test the db on your exhaust. If you pass the test, they will give you a california state sticker certifing your exhaust is legal.
Apparently in WV dB readings don't matter, the law leaves the ticketing totally up to the discretion of the officer. What kinda BS is that.
Cosworth, I'll remember that but I honestly don't think the sound had much to do w/ it. My car isn't loud cruising on the interstate. I figure the guy was in a pissy mood and saw a clean yellow car w/ shiny wheels and a shiny exhaust w/ a young guy driving and thought " hey I'm a jerk maybe I'll pull him over".
< Who remembering not to let other ruin his day and is getting in a better mood already, thanks for the laugh Will

I will ship you xr4racers cat back (w/o the silencer)... buddy klub spec II = nice and loud. The next time you get pulled over and he tells you to rev it.... just stand on the limiter for ~30 seconds. The butt-klub II will make his ears bleed.

I got pulled over this weekend in my Subie doing 78 in a 65 and i just got a warning. The officer said they were just looking for Drunk Drivers on Corridor G. Oh well it sounds like you got an *******. Were you on the Turnpike because those guys have a chip on their shoulder.
here is some info that might help you next time:
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Regardless, other than not calling attention to ourselves by not speeding, street racing, etc., we don't have any control over whether or not a given police officer decides to pull us over. Let's take a moment to review the California Vehicle Code; I'll link to the full text of the law and summarize (but be forewarned, I'm not a lawyer so you shouldn't consider my comments as any form of legal advice):
27150 - Adequate Muffler Required states that every registered car must have an adequate (working, compliant) muffler system, except for off-road vehicles and cars at a sanctioned competitive event.
27150.1 - Sale of Exhaust Systems basically says that businesses are not allowed to sell non-compliant exhaust systems or components.
27150.2 (a) - Regulations Governing Exhaust Systems says that only cars having been ticketed for an illegal exhaust can be smogged/tested by a referee station.
27150.3 - Exhaust Systems: Whistle-Tip Prohibition bans whistle-tips.
:woowoo:
27150.5 - Sale of Noncomplying Exhaust System basically says that if you get a ticket for an illegal exhaust, the shop that sold it to you is required to replace it with a compliant (legal) exhaust, or reimburse you the parts and labor costs of installing a legal exhaust elsewhere. (Interesting, I didn't know this before!)
27150.7 - Dismissal of Prosecution says that your ticket for an illegal exhaust can be dismissed if (having been cited) you get a referee station to issue a certificate that your exhaust system is compliant.
27151 - Modification of Exhaust Systems (a) says that it's illegal to modify an exhaust system in a way that will make it too loud, (b) that for cars, the noise limit is 95 dbA, as tested according to SAE standard J1169 (May 1998).
27153 - Exhaust Products states your car shouldn't spit out "excessive" smoke, flame
, gas, oil or fuel.
27153.5 - Motor Vehicle Exhaust Standards says (in so many words) your car shouldn't emit dark, opaque smoke.
27156 - Gross Polluter: Air Pollution Control Device says that (a-c) it's illegal to operate, sell, advertise any modification/removal/alteration of a required pollution control device (read: catalytic converter); (d-e) anybody doing so will receive the maximum fine; (h) 27156 doesn't apply to any mod, system, device that are officially CARB-exempt.
Well, those are (some of) the laws regarding exhaust systems; I'm sure there are laws for other mods as well.</TD></TR></TABLE>

I bet when you go to court if you mention that and ask when the cop had his last physical (probably not for years(ear test)) you should be able to walk free on this.
A cops using his/human judgment to issue a ticket based on his opinion is something that should not be... If they feel it's a problem in the area then they should use meters like they do for tinted windows.
And you might also want to mention that in court , it proves a point that certain things should not be left up to human judgment.
Good luck, but be ready for battle when you walk into court. Even have pictures of your exhaust system, receipts, and anything else you can to provide to toss the cops and judge off balance.

Chris if you want you could pay this grease monkey to put your stock exhaust back on and I'll gladly write up a receipt.
I honestly think if you went to court for it you could get it totally thrown out. Or just find a shop that will print out a receipt for you. A shop like me that is

i recently had to deal with a similar situation. pulled over for exhaust and received a non fixable ticket. I had to pay bail 109$.. pled not guilty and went to court. The cop dismissed me.
I also thought the state ref was free. it was for me anyways.
