Default Painting my CRX Rustoleum Flat Black

After a lot of reading last night/this morning i slept on the idea of painting my car.... i woke up and went to work @ 6am and on my lunch break i bought a siphon feed spray gun and a 5.5hp 24 gallon compressor.... got a quart of rustoleum flat black (oil based... hummmm) and a lil can of acetone to thin it down for the gun. got 3 rolls of painters tape ($18 :-( suck ***) and some sand paper and bondo.

i have 4 dime sized spots of surface rust i'm goingt o use the bondo to "fix" as well as some nicks and gashes in the bumper... doubt it will work for the bumper but worst case scenario it doesn't and i have to spray a new bumper down the road. no biggie.

i have $600 TOTAL invested in this car.... IF you wanted to include the pile of parts i have to finish my mini-me i have just under $750 in it.... TOTAL.... to spend more than $50 on a paint job would be assinine.

Here's my progress so far.... about an hour worth of "work" including the 5 mins at the gas station gettin beer.

tomorrow we're going to finish taping, scuffing the paint, and doin the bondo work... we'll see how goes.

-Erik <---- will be burning a tank or two of propane in the next two days to heat my 10x30 bay

i don't really care for flat black either but I couldn't justify spending the cash on a "real" paint job or taking the time to do a "real" paint job myself since i'm probably going to slide this thing into a tree or do something stupid that's going to damage it in one way or another.... that and it's only a $600 car.... to spend that much or more on a paint job just isn't my idea of a wise choice. i've dumped too much money into vehicles... i'm doing my beater on a budget this time.

just read up... a lot.... i did for about 6 hours straight before i bought any of this stuff and got started. i'm sure i'll still screw it up somehow but at least i'll have a little practice... and flat black seems to be a good "Easy" color to spray. time will tell.

i'll update this thread with more horrible quality camera phone pictures tomorrow....

yea... the lazyness factor was pretty high yesterday. my shirt and jeans have pink spots from sanding. oh well

b/c maaco wants $250 to respray the car red, not including door jams or anything.... $500 to spray it any color and include door jams.

when i'm "done" with this project in the next couple days it will have ended up costing me $7.50 for paint, $5 for acetone, $6 for bondo, $10 for sandpaper, another $18 for painter's tape, the packing paper was a FREEBIE!!, and then however many 12 packs of bud light @ $8 a pop..... so this paint job will cost me roughly $47 bucks excluding the beer... versus $250-$500....

the only spots of rust i had was surface rust right under the gas door area. looks like when the previous owner had maaco or some other shitty place spray it they had some trash in the paint or something b/c it bubbled in 4 small dime sized spots right around that area. i sanded it down and bondo'd it and they were really not that deep at all.... i dunno how thick the metal is but i sanded down to bare metal and it was shining... no rust... and i dind't sand through it to create a hole. i dunno much about body work and the fiberglass route might have been better.... i just don't know anything about this stuff to be honest. the only spot i had to pile on the bondo was on the rear passenger side fender edge near where it meets the back bumper. i went a little crazy with the grinder and ripped out a nice ***** by accident. whoops. i think i have it done prety decent all things considered... but again, only time will tell.

-Erik <---- will be sanding tonight after work

the car is already taped up beyond driveability at this point and all the lights are already taken out. definatly not road trip worthy, haha.

that would be awesome if i could use your heater though. i was afraid i was going to have to rent one since i couldn't find anyone that had one they weren't currently using.

let me know when's good. i'll definatly get you back for this somehow, just not sure how yet since you already have everything, haha

-Erik <--- going back to work until 7 or 8 and then planning to finish sanding tonight so i can spray either tonight or right after class tomorrow morning.
