ATS 4.929 Final Drive Part 3: It is installed!!! First impressions...
The transmission: usdm itr 1-5, ats 4.929 final drive. Stock clutch and flywheel on '00 usdm itr.
First let me say that I was mildly disappointed with this gear at first. It didn't seem like that much of an upgrade over stock... Then I kept driving...
It gets more noticable!
I can now induce wheelspin in 1st by dropping the clutch at 3k!
And those of you worried about rpms being too high on the highway, stop whining!
Seriously, I'd go with a 5.25 if I could find one.
I can't think of a downside to this final drive, period. Better pull in every gear... Great for around town since you can now drive at 1.5-2k rpms without bogging...
Great for road racing, drag, autox..... Unless you have an s/c or turbo (for obvious reasons), this is the best mod you can do! Especially if you have just a bolt-on or stock itr...
Oh yeah, some of you are gonna say that the jdm 4.785 is plenty. Well, I can't imagine you can even tell the difference of the jdm over stock... I'm so glad I went with the 4.929... Hrm... I wonder what a 6.0 final would be like...
5th gear:
-65mph at 4k rpms indicated (3800rpms actual)
-70mph at 4200 rpms indicated (4k rpms actual)
-80mph at 4800 rpms indicated (4600 rpms actual)
Thank you's to Trey, Cosworth, Pyromaster, Fast4dr, b18c5-eh2, Chris (rodney), and of course David Blankenship!

The bogging seems like a power related issue to me, so I'm not sure how the FD is going to make a change this drastic...
I really want one of those when I get my ITR, I mean seriously how often do you drive over 100mph, who cares about that.
I'm guessing you don't do track events.
You'd guess right...all he wants out of his R is to beat his friend's M3...
To answer the question, "How often do you drive over 100mph?"
My answer: Every time I hit the highway. I guess it's a foreign concept to many on these boards, but I drive fast on the highway. Keep my eyes peeled and don't speed around corners in unfamiliar territory, and I don't get tickets. (Accidents are another story, I had mine going 45mph in a straight line...total freak accident) On long trips when I know I can, I frequently hit 140 or so when I see a clear road ahead. So for me, this question of how it affects hi-speed highway cruising is a very important one.

Or maybe there is just less traffic where you live... I top out 4th gear maybe once a month while merging onto the freeway, and I've only topped out 5th once.
Okay, I can understand that it would pull better in gear, but how is the final drive going to keep your car from bogging at 1.5-2k RPMS?? If you are driving "around town" I would say you will be using 3rd and 4th gears a lot. Are you saying that at 1.5k RPMS in 3rd or 4th the car will NOT bog?!

blackteg97, et. al: my top speed is now reduced from 146 to 138mph with the stock rev limiter... I don't think I have any business driving 146 mph on public roads anyway!
(Although I do occasionally exceed the speed limite when I judge it is prudent to do so.) Nevermind my foolishness earlier in life...
But I do see where I don't want to lose my edge on a road course on the 4-5 shift on the long straights... Vipers don't care if your top speed is 240mph if you can't get there before them...
And Reid, what is the top speed you've gotten up to on any road course in a teg? Just out of curiosity...
*edited for typo's... Damn I'm going to bed! This whole final drive thing has kept me up past 4am for several nights now...
Also: Someone with a bone stock itr please install the ATS Final as your first mod and give us your opinion of the advantages in drag, autox, and daily driving!
If I had things to do all over again, I think this final drive would be my first mod, followed closely by a vafc and some dyno time... Better bang for the buck, and no worries about internals like cams or reliability like s/c or turbo...

Well I know that when I had the stock final drive I would bog if I tried to floor it at 1-2k, rpms... ****, even at 3k rpms I would bog! Now, it pulls at that rate and accelerates faster, but it also doesn't have as much trouble at lower rpms as it used to - simply because it pulls much more easily with a bigger final.
good job ken!
just out of curiousity, how'd you calculate the new top speed?

Damn Ken, 4am....
You've been at it for a while, glad you got it running and I could help. At least you have today off and can sleep late.
I'm stuck at work urm "working".

Ken - there is somebody on this MB who has a bone-stock ITR who's doing the ATS first. NO intake, header, exhaust, - BONE stock with the ATS as the first mod.
I'm sure he'll be posting up soon.

not to say i told you so, but didn't i? j/k bro, you are one of the few original believers of the ATS 4.93. regarding the 4.93 in a relatively stock itr, 1greyteg (anton) will be installing his in a month or so. his car is mostly stock (spoon header & ice box) i'm sure he will be a post *****...er..quite talkative after he gets it installed. anyway, good job ken!
What do you mean "bog"?

Yes, I know that the bigger FD improves acceleration... And I understand exactly what your saying, I guess I just underestimated the real world effects that the FD would have. If you can now floor it at 2k RPMs and not bog, then I need to get a FD

ok...mild stock(bolt-ons)=excellent ATS final
what about with big cams(jun3,toda b,c's)??
will you be too traction-limited to the point where you have to baby the throttle(hope not)
i know bigger cams are mostly upper rpm's but they do have improvement all
across right?
leave it alone and just add a light flywheel with big cams better?

Meaning you hit the limiter (which is possible), or you ran out of room?
I can now induce wheelspin in 1st by dropping the clutch at 3k
