Default Advancing timing to 18

Could someone explain how to do this on a Teg? I've adjusted the timing on my MR2 before, but I'm not sure how do to it on a Honda. What indicates where the timing is when you use the timing light? Also, do you just turn the distributor like you do on Toyotas? Thanks for any help. A search just turned up whether you should do this or not. I already knew that discussion.

I'm assuming you have an inductive advance timing gun (pretty common). First, short out your service connector under your glove box with a paperclip. Your engine maintenance light will come on. Start the car and let it idle till warm. Hook up your timing gun with the inductive pickup attached to your #1 spark plug wire. Shoot the timing light down the sighting spine on the lower cover and onto your crank pulley. Set your timing gun to the desired timing and note where the white dot on the pulley falls in relation to the spine. Loosen your distributor and rotate it until the white dot falls in line with the spine. Turning the distributor to the front of the car advances your timing, turning to the rear retards your timing. When you have the timing set, re-tighten your distributor and double-check your timing. Unhook your timing gun and remove the paper clip from your service connector. Turn off car and reset the ecu (disconnect battery or remove the 15amp fuse for 15-20 seconds). You're done.
