VIR 13 Hour Endurance Pics...
Hey - those really are all some great photos. But the night ones are great - especially the Del Slo in the pits. Great job all around!
- Markus
PS - Don't know how that one Meotter guy did in the race but looks like he won the best looking pit crew award (sorry Knestis and Catch).

Honda Challege H1. Probably got a nicely built B18C5.

Are the lights on the Del Sol attached to the posts for the hood pins? How does one do that? Extra long posts with a 2nd hole above the one for the pins?

Hi.
when sam races that del sol with us in ECHC, it is in H1 with a b20vtec motor. i'm not sure if they ran a different motor in the 13 hour, though....

Anybody has any more info on that TL? It seems like a pretty serious effort and the crew all have nice fire suits, too. What class is it built for and what kind of times does that thing turn? It looks really good.
Great pics
Great pics

The engine we've been running most recently in Honda Challenge is a B20 bottom end with a ported B16 head & stage 1 cams. Next year we'll be going to a B18 because the B20 clearly has some reliability issues that you can't (legally) fix in H1. Even if I were to beef up the bottom ends, the cost ends up being not much less than a good B18C.
The enduro motor is a B18C5 bottom end built for low compression (B16 pistons) with reconditioned & deburred rods. Even running the brisk pace we ran for the race it was still running strong & pumping 80psi oil pressure at the end of the race.
FYI a solid-disc clutch does not kill the tranny if you shift properly. 4th gear got a little notchy at hour 7 and it actually got easier to shift when things cooled off at night. Other than that and a new rear wheel bearing the car could do a sprint race after this weekend.
All we did for the light-bar set up was ran the hood pins longer and drilled an extra set of holes in the pins. The light bar has its own set of hood pin clips. It takes about 30 seconds to hook the lights up.
We'll be running a different set of lights next time we do this because either the color or the wavelength of the lights didn't do too well at VIR. Things looked kind of flat in the dark and the pavement sort of blended in with the grass. It was really bad in the uphill esses and we lost a lot of speed in the dark. A bigger batttery and a relocated alternator are in the works. I don't ever want to do half a lap with no lights again and if we had actually been able to get at the dam alternator we'd have only lost 3 laps instead of 30.
The Del Sol, except for the bottom end and the lights, was pretty much what we usually run in Honda Challenge (including the stock fuel tank).
As far as the TL goes, it's a pretty decent car speed-wise (I think I'd have him for breakfast at CMP or Roebling, though). The fast race lap was a 2:14.351 for the TL. Ours was a 2:14.406. The World Challenge Civic (#31) cracked off a 2:12.427. Incidentally all three of the Hondas were the quickest overall and the only ones to break out of the 16's in the race. The Firebird that qualified 4th only managed a 2:17.463 and the quickest ITS car was the Bimmerworld BMW at 2:16.990.
Except for the hood, the TL looks H1 legal from the brief look I had of it when they arrived Friday. I have no idea what it was built for originally. The same team also ran an ITS 5th gen Prelude as well.

Just a regular point & shoot Sony DSC-F717 but used manual settings on some
of the actions shots and played with the contrast on most of them using
photoshop. I still don't think I'm ready to step up to a fully manual
Digital SLR though...maybe one day when I have an extra grand+ laying around
that's not going to a vehicle...yeah riiiight.
It will take forever to reply individually but it appears that all of you
are correct...
The hood pins do have an extra hole at the top to pin the light bar. They
have two identical setups and I think they are wanting to sell them to get
Hella's...call Sam up and he might give a good deal.
Don't want to advertise what people have but I guess it's ok to say the past
few months they have been running the B20VTEC and for this race a B18 (I
think C5) and B16 head w/ a little machine work.
For those who weren't there...They qualified 2nd (Lockwood RaceWorks) and
ran consistently for the first 10 hours in 5th or 6th place and were in 2nd
place at about 11hours. I think the TL and world challenge Civic ran up
front the entire race but the TL started dropping back half-way
through...don't even remember if it even finished but I think it was one of
the best sounding out there (damn that purple & yellow FB and orange
Rabbit!). Anyways, at 11 hours or so the Del Sol's alternator went out and
it took at least 30 minutes to replace it then the 3 rib pulley on the
replacement alternator broke the belt on the first or second lap back
out...came back in and replaced the belt with the very last one (broke one a
couple days before during practice due to a machine shop error...that's a
whole new story within itself) and using a pocketknife cut one rib off
hoping that it would hold to finish the race. We ended up going back out
there in 30-35th place (?) and I believe caught up to 24 or 25th by the end.
Oh, did I mention they qualified and started that race knowing it had a bad
starter that only worked about 5% of the time? It was also their sprint
car...maybe they'll have better luck once the endurance car is complete.

Right now it will be me, Scott Fredricksen and BMW dude Carter Hunt. Williard could do it too if he'll ever get a comp. license. I'll give you a call if one of these guys backs out.
We tried to throw together a 2004 effort at the last minute; we had 8 free tires and part of a crew, but my real job got in the way.

There is still a full manual mode in all of the DSLR's. It helps when you are learning to first use it, but you can move on to Shutter priority and aperture priority, and if you have big cajones, full manual

The car was built for specifically for H1 and for endurance racing. In addition to VIR, it's done both MidOhio "National" HC races, 1 USTCC race, and will be going to the 25 Hour.
Nasa Rule updates:
"16.4 (c) Hybrid, NSX, TL and S2000 cars are permitted to replace hood, bumper supports, front bumper cover, and mirrors with any substitute."
I'm happy to comment on any questions about the TL, just let me know.
We definately need more lights for night sessions.
The Preluded cracked a clutch hard line on lap 1 (go figure!!) which delayed us by ~2 hours, otherwise it probably would have a been in the top 5 of ITS.

Ok then if you insist, I have a couple.
What engine prep is allowed on these H1 cars you mentioned above (including the TL) - same level as the H2-H5 classes? Also, I am curious how the front tires hold up on this car, especially during the enduro.

AFAIK, the non-hybrid H1 cars run by the same engine prep rules as H2-H5. I think the CF hood rule is one of a few (only?) exception to the standard h2-h5 prep.

TL is in the same H1 boat as S2000 & NSX which is same as h2-h5 for engine prep.
At VIR, 4 hours on fronts, 8 on back (could have probably gone 9).
Next time we'll have our new cat delete "header" from Joe at Prototype Racing. It's hard to call it a header as it's only a single pipe from each bank because 2 of the 3 stock cats bolt directly to the head with a single opening (the 3rd is under the floor).
Anything else?
