Default Carbon-fiber sunroof (56k beware)

I had a lot of questions about my c/f sunroof. It's a really painful issue with all CRXs as they rust like crazy. So, I just decided to share some info.
I got the c/f sunroof panel from another CRX buddy for about US$400 (apparently there are cheaper deals). It was made in Taiwan (I wonder who sells them if any). I saw similar panel on ebay starting at $250 or so.
I measured the panel making sure it'd fit and it looked perfect. When I got home and tried to fit the holddowns from the rusty sunroof of my otherwise rust-free CRX, i got a surprise.
It didn't fit. The holes were a bit off and I was about to get really upset.
I thought for a while and decided to try adjusting the holddowns and brackets.
I went to Honda and got new 4 holddown pieces (on each side) and with a file expanded the screw holes on them.
Eventually the panels went on the screws buried in the fiberglass body of the panel.
Then I tried to fit the stock railings. The screw loaction was off, too.
I did the same expanding the holes until they fit. It wasn't too bad. So I went to install it. The railings barely fit.
I was afraid the roof wouldn't close or the motor might be affected, but, alas, it closed. Strangely, the roof without the seal was popping out a bit on the left side.
I had to take it off again and start shaving the ralings and fiberglass body until it fit right. That was not all.
The stock seal is supposed to go perfect on the stock panel that has really sharp edges to hold the seal. But the c/f panel has very dull and thicker edges.
So, the seal was a bitch to fit. It was coming off all the time until I managed to put it on. I had to put the sealant with the seal on right on the panel.
The last problem I had was with the little plastic stoppers that are really hard to screw from/to the back of the panel.
They are very flimsy, crack easily and sometimes hard to get. I ended up getting new ones from Honda.
Well here's the end result. It looks great, feels good, much lighter for the motor, doesn't rust or leak.

Definitely get one if you can.

Awesome! Maybe in the future I will buy one for my CRX, but I will paint it to match the car. the CF look is too ghetto for me. Congrats on getting it to work though. I love the idea of a rust free sunroof.

It looks very nice but for 400$ I'll pass. I'm lucky enough to have a local buddy that creates CF stuff in his own garage... He's done VERY nice hoods, body panels, exhausts, and other miscellaneous stuff. I'm picking up a new crx and building a racecar out of it therefore I will be removing all the sunroof stuff. I will probably give the sunroof panel to my buddy, along with a few dollars and have him craft me a CF sunroof for my street car.

Infact... if this gets much response he might want to make multiple panels, assuming he could adequetely profit from it.

These bitches are really tough to make. I spoke to a few guys and they refused, citing too many holes and measurements to make ... I don't your buddy will devote so much time for a real panel. There's also c/f plugs in the market.

Search the forum, there are threads about it.

I have the ebay Arospeed carbon fiber sunroof. I paid $255 including shipping, Interesting.....when I got it the box was marked "Made in Taiwan". It wasn't too hard to install, the posts had be carefully bent to fit the OEM brackets. It also isn't solid carbon fiber, it's fiberglass with a carbon fiber overlay. All in all it looks good and will never rust.....

Never seen any homies in the hood with carbon fiber on their smokin beaters with spinners.

I went through the same hell as you did. I simply glued the weather strip on. Works great.

That is true, but you don't see the weave until you get up close. There was someone here on honda-tech that put a CF hood, and fenders on his EG and it looked like he had just wrecked the car and was waiting for a paint job on his replacement car bodyparts. It just looked like it was being repaired and not upgraded. Then again, that's just IMO. I do know homies in the hood use black hoods and scuff them up to make you think they have CF hoods from far away.

p.s. Somehow this reminds me of the kid at my local Miami Subs parkinglot that said "Wanna race your CRX against my Si?" "Whatcha got?" "It's 2000 Civic Si VTEC and it's slammed and GUTTED." "Ok, but you don't stand a chance, I've got the same motor in a lighterweight car." "No you don't. hahaha (points to his friends) This fool thinks he's got VTEC in that little car. Ah hahaha." "Ok, later" (the look on him and his friends faces as I rev to 8200 down the highway.)

I'm curious to know how much lighter the CF VS. the steel panel is? can't be much more than 1lb or so? Weight wise since you'd be keeping the motor and all its not much. But def cool since it won't rust.

I can pick mine up with a pinky.
But since it's such a small surface there's not that much of a difference.

It's much lighter in absolute terms (I don't have numbers) but relative to thw overall weight of the car it's almost nothing.

What's important tho is that it takes weight off the top that makes the car a bit more stable. So in this effect it can even be compared to puting a c/f hood vs the steel one (although the hood also lightens the heavy front).

I'm definitely going with the c/f hood as well after I do the engine swap and before I repaint it ...
