Default DC5R Muffler's straight thru bypass flap (pics !)

So I've been hearing that the DC5 ITR muffler has some type of bypass flap that opens under a certain rpm (or exhaust flow) to go from a fully chambered design to more or less, a straight thru (or at least less muffled) type. I thought that sounded pretty damn trick, so I picked one up, hacked off the inlet piping and here it is.

i would think after hacking the inlet pipe off the muffler's flow would be less than optimal even after being rewelded together.

the piping on the cat back is slightly larger. I think 58mm. I'm not sure about the inlet.

I may or may not use the muffler... If I can get it on my EG... it should be a nice, mellow muffler... if I can't get it to fit well... it's gunna be sold to recover the cost of curiousity...lol

The inlet is 2.25", which is about 57mm.

My assumptions from what I know thus far:

The flap will stay closed under low rpm, but, at higher rpm, when the chambered design becomes too restrictive, the pressure built up should force the spring loaded flap open, which appears to bypass at least one of the chambers, reducing the amount of distance it needs to travel to the tip.

This is the best pic I could find on the inner workings... I'd open up my own to investigate... but I ain't THAT paid....

[QUOTE=X2BOARD]Honda Civic ... The Ford Mustang of the next decade .... Lots of 'em will be fast ... and just as many won't be reliable.[QUOTE]
What?!?!!? My 5.0 mustang was the most reliable car I knew of. Ran strong with no engine work at 322,800 miles when i sold it. I still see it cruise around every once in a while

YOUR mustang... hehe... the V8's are good engines... but Ford's quality control tolerances are WIIIDE... many other mustang owners experience different outcomes.... either way... I wasn't only referring to problems with the engine alone.

Back OT... I will be putting on this exhaust shortly... with lots of piping mods, I determined that I can fit it on an EG hatch (tight, but it'll work) I currently run a straight thru 2.5" barrell... lets see how the DC5R unit will compare to a straight thru !

I'll keep it posted when it happens.

I currently use a 2002 nissan maxima muffler on my Dc2 . It also has a secondary valve that opens up a second chamber to reduce exhaust restrictions. With lower rpms I get lowend power and at high rpms the muffler opens up giving better high end power.

I finally put on the DC5R muffler... it was a TIGHT squeeze and I do have a resonance at 3-4500 rpm which I gotta get fixed (touching somewhere). It currently looks like *** monkey since the outer end of the cannister is right up on the bumper and the HUGE 7" tip sticks out like a sore thumb (I'll have it shortened eventually).

The results... so far I've driven it only 20 miles, but the low end is DEFINIETLY better... the car will spin it's tires at 2k rpm and has a small increase in power around 4500 rpm at WOT (I assume the bypass valve is working well... ) It is quiet except for the resonation and my short ram seems to be louder than my exhaust now.

The down side ? Going from a straight thru design to this setup... my top end has been affected NOTABLY. The car just doesn't pull the same from 6-8k. It feels a little bland now, unlike before... when I'd get a stiffy hearing the N1 scream.

The rattle is really annoying on deceleration, so I won't pass judgement on the DC5R muffler until I get it (rattle) silenced.

Keep y'all up to date.... pics in a day or so....embarrasing as they are.

I've had both a mugen twin loop and I'm running DC5 R exhuast now. it's a huge difference in power. but I like my car quiet so it's ok as far as not being loud. I do however have a JDM header which makes a world of difference.

so the dc5 exhaust makes more power than your twin loop? i always thought the mugen was a bit restrictive
