Where do you buy your metal at ?
Not piping but like angle iron, sheet metal and other stuff like that. I know of mcmastercarr and that site is pretty confusing at times. Just wondering if there were any other sites. I want to make a nice little car or table like this one.

They have the instructions on how to found here.

http://www.metalsupermarket.com/ if I need a bunch of metal. They cut to length and only charge you for what you need.

I was thinking the same thing, might take a run there. If I don't make the table I would like to make this, or maybe make both.

I'll check that other site out.
Edited, just checked that site out and come to find out there right by my house. Might take a trip, the only downside to the website is they have no pics, anyone know the difference in steel plates and steel sheets ?

the general answer is that sheets are thinner than plate.
the general answer is that sheets are thinner than plate.
The answer really is that it's very much a regional thing. Check your yellow pages for steel. Yeah lots of places have it but if you have to ship it across the country the shipping charges will kill you. Try to buy local unless it doesn't weigh much.
scrapyards are gold mines. You just gotta find one around you. You can buy metal by the pound and you can get stuff for really cheap.
I bought a 10 foot stick of aluminum 2.5 inch pipe and a huge sheet of polished aluminum flat stock for $30.00. Thats the kinda deals there are at scrapyards

Well I bought angle iron at Home depot just for the time being and it was 2.50 for about 4 feet, I did not think that was to bad.
But http://www.metalsupermarkets.com/ is right by my house, actually its like 5 mins away so I'm gonna head there tomorrow and check them out.

The only downer about "real" places is when you buy tubing, often (not always) you're stuck with 20ft of it. Yes many places cut it (for a fee) but you still own all 20ft of it. The better places have separate sections for "rems" left-overs that are smaller.

Thats what I was kind of worried about, well I take a look around and see if they have smaller stuff.

"The key to Metal Supermarkets success story is the unparalleled level of service each store provides to the metals purchasers in its territory. Metal purchasers can buy whatever size or type of metal they need quickly and easily with no minimum order size. Orders are cut to size and delivered, fast! "
So it looks like they will do any size, I'm gonna head there today and check out there prices.

Went there today and I just bought angle iron, actually turned out to be like 10 cents more them home depot. Sheet metal cost a ton also from them, but they were nice guys and if I ever need any more metal I know where to go. Thanks for telling me about them d.i.d
How much did you pay for what size angle? A few months (end of july) ago for a project I picked up about 30 20ft lengths of 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 1/8 HR angle at $11 per length, 17 sheets of 20g CR at $30 a sheet, and 9 sheets of 22g CR for $25 a sheet. 3 months before i ordered, prices were about $5 less per sheet, and $2 less per length of angle. Friggen steel prices have SKY ROCKETED. When they delivered the steel the truck driver said the yard was buying scrap at as much as $1 per lb....also said SS and AL sheet was crazy exspensive. Just curious what you guys are paying for this stuff?
Kinda ironic all this isn't it. For decades we badmouthed China about being so behind the times and being communist... well they're slowly moving themselves forward. So we want them to be just like us huh? Okay, guess what' will/is happening to oil prices when 1 BILLION more people get their driver's licences. And several BILLION more need new housing/buildings/cars => steel needs will/have skyrocketed. Welcome to capitalism and the supply/demand curve. Doh!

I think it was 1/4 angle iron, or actually a little thinner and I payed I think 7.99 for 8 feet. I asked them about sheet metal, and I got quoted for 18 or 16 gauge 3 by 3 was 28 dollars he said it came sheared though, I think that means the edges are rolled. Also whats the big difference between cold or hot rolled metal ?

how about madrel bends will some places sell "S" bends and stuff or do you just have to make angles yourself by cutting straight pipe at angles and pieceing them together

Check Aircraft Spruce, they sell donuts of various radials that you can cut and weld to what ever shape you want.
