DIY $4 Water intercooler sprayer PIC & VID

Well my dream came true. I know what you guys are going to say. "Spraying water on your IC isn't going to make a huge performance gain" Well your right. Corkey Bell, who wrote "Maximum Boost", said that spraying the IC with water helps the intercooler get about 5-7& better efficiency and that may add up to only a couple WHP if at all.
The reason I did this was just to be unique and add a little somethin to my car. The idea isn't new, stock WRX STI's have this on there poorly mounted hood IC. I was surprised how easy it was to install and how cheap my parts list came out to!
First, I have to say that I removed the rear window wiper and so I have no use for the fluid line that goes back there. If you DO have yours then when you spray your IC it will spray your rear windows too. I'm sure you can figure something out. In any case I took the front bumper off and found the two motors that drive the washer fluid pumps. I found out which one goes to the rear and disconnect the line. I bought some vaccum tubing (about the same size as the stock tubing), some 180 degree sprinklers that fit the tubing (for small plants normally), a T for the tubing to sprinkler, and an end cap for the hose. A total of about $4. I then ran the tubbing from the motor across the bumper and found a spot to mount them using a drill. I used two sprinklers with my setup and just stuck them through the bumper to the hidden hose. Cap off the end and VOILA! you have a sprinkler system for your IC!

Tell me what you guys think...is it ricy? I hate fried rice

The stock windshield washer pump can't spray worth sh*t... By the time you "T" the stock washer fluid lines, it would just drizzle out like in your video. That in reality, would not even improve 1% efficiency.
I've played around with the intercooler spray in my other car, and the best way to do it is to run another pump and have another switch
The stock washer pump will not give enough pressure to give a wide spray.
Here's a pic of what an effective spray should look like -- the goal is to provide the most coverage on the intercooler core:

There are no leaks! The vid looks really bad
. I suggest opening the vid to maximum viewing then you'll see it works perfectly. The leak is just afterwards dripping.

i dont think the mist that manages to make it through the ic to the turbo will have any effect, it would be so minimal, then remember, those water droplets have to make it through the ic.
I don't have the turbo mounted just yet but yeah It'll be right behind the IC. the thing is rain would be a serious issue at 50 MPH. Obviously it's not so no the turbo never sees the water.
I'll get a pic of it spraying just like Tony's. I don't see why he says the water pressure isn't high enough
. I almost had too much water pressure. I think I could put 2 more sprayers on and it would be fine. Any more and I would have to test but i''m sure it could do it.

If you hook up another pump and nozzles it will spray exactly like shown in the picture. A buddy of mine rigged this on his WRX and it came out damn good, kept the IC noticably cooler to the touch after running it.
if you really want it to cool mix a 50/50 of water and rubbing alcohol, or ice or all 3, also some of the dripping will be from the weight of the water pushing thru the factory pump, kinda like a syphon, i have had a little problem with this on my eclipse but not ont he honda so far........................

I'm actually doing this on my beater/sleeper Integra only I'm taking it a step further. On my low boost setting the sprayers won't function. When I switch to the high boost setting they will work at any pressure ABOVE the low boost setting. Example, low boost is set at 6psi. When boost reaches 6psi and above, the sprayers work. How am I doing this? NOS hobbs switch. I'm wiring a switch and a relay to a hobbs switch that is adjustable. When I arm the switch, the hobbs switch closes and triggers the relay with will power the rear washer motor AND open the e-cutout.
I just bought windshield washer pumps from Auto parts stores, and then hook them up.
The 3 nozzles you see in my pic are actually powered by 2 pumps... That is the only way to get a finer mist so that when the engine fan is on, it will actually "suck" in the water mist and seep through the intercooler
A wider spray will also cover most of the area on the intercooler. My particular IC spray covers about 80% of the core's surface.
By using one pump, it will never create enough pressure for both nozzles to spray a finer mist. It will be large droplets just like your windshield washer, and unfortunately, it won't do much.
Of course, it just depends how dedicated you are for this type of DIY mod. There are actually Supra guys (500+ WHP though) who did a nice IC spray system and recovers 35-40 WHP on the dyno after 5-6 pulls. If I am going to spend time to build an IC spray, it better be an effective one.

Looks like a good way to get booted out of any track I've been to and to make sure you have 0 traction with a nice coating of water in front of the car..lol

Pretty good idea though. We use a similar system on some of our bigger building cooling systems (cooling towers) Evaporative cooling is one of the most cost effective ways to cool down something like an intercooler.
Nice project. Experiment with different types of nozzles to get the best coverage possible.

Hmm I know this is an old thread... but I watched that video at full screen like 10 times and all I see is water dripping down from the bumper.
With hondata or EMS you could make it spray at WOT
