Default I made a ghetto Comptech Icebox today...removed the AEM CAI...please take a look, *Many Pictures*

So I decided today 12/11 while it is 65 degrees outside in BUFFALO NY (yes, strange isn't it?) to remove my AEM CAI and re-install my stock airbox assembly for the winter. So I set out to put my stock airbox in. Then I remember seeing someone post a thread about using the stock tubing to form a poor-man's CAI. Well, I made my own fabrication of that today.

I have to confess, I did my first riceboy mod today

First, I noticed something interesting. I know that people were saying that their AEM was rubbing on their A/C lines, but I always thought it was rubbing against the lines near the coolant overflow container, but in reality, its the lines that the AEM sits on top of. Good thing I caught it in time....

So my friend and I tried Dremeling the resonator box in half along the line, but we ended up snapping the dremel bit ( I don't know how, so don't ask)...so we decided to use a better tool...

and the result...

So, the resonator box split pretty nicely, and I pulled the curved pipe out and ditched the resonator...you can see how I put it together in this picture..

One thing I notcied when I had all the AEM stuff off, was that the inside of the tube and the throttle body had a lotta crap in it...the price we pay for high-flow...worth it? I dunno, im scared of that crap getting into the engine....

So here's how it sits and looks in the enginebay

The problem I had was having the pipe sit without falling out of the bottom of the box...so after much thinking, I decided to just duct tape it like so (below) and figure out something easier later on...I didnt want to glue it or melt it on or anything since removing it would be annoying

As far as water collecting in the tube, there is actually a tiny hole at the bottom, here is the picture of that, its pretty hard to see but I'm sure you'll see it eventually...

So that was my day. Oh and I changed my oil too...and had some issues...but anyway....I had a little trouble fitting the elbow taken from the resonator without moving the fenderwell guard AND the center splash/center guard thing...no need to remove the wheel or front bumper, just turn the wheel all the way to the right or left...

Butt dyno was misleading....the sound isn't as agressive as the AEM was, since I'm using the stock filter...perhaps the drop in K&N filter would give me some more performance.....as far as it comparing to the aem, I cant say that it felt any faster, but it defintely didn't feel any SLOWER....
So that's my ghetto comptech icebox story. Welcome to any comments, criticism, questions, etc?

Take two hose clamps and place them on either pipe with wire bails between them to hold the pipes at their joints.

I'm not really sure what your trying to say, can you elaborate a bit further?

can't wait to compare dyno's vs this, the aem, and the ghetto icebox with k&n

When I did my 'home job' on the filter box (April 2000), there was NO 'drop-in K&N' available in Australia (still isn't?!)....so this is what I did with the 'standard' filter box.

* Cut the factory paper filter off, just after the section that slots into the edge of the filter box.
* Made up an aluminium adapter and gluded it to the section where the old paper filter came off. The new filter slips over the adapter and is held in place by - for a lack of a proper name - one of those self-tightening rings (with the screw on the side).

* At the front end, I got another piece of aluminium and glued it to the concave section of the filter.
* Took the rubber gromit off the orginal filter and placed in on the end of the aluminum rod.

* Removed the resonator.
* Utilised the top (from the picture below) black piece of tubing and pushed it through the hole in the bottom of the filter box (from the inside). It reaches down near the front spoiler intake.
* Replaced the filter box lid and that's it.

Note: If you like the sound/noise of the AEM, you can simply remove the filter box lid anytime (giving the wonderful 'induction roar') and replace it when you get tired of the sound! This gives you the best of both worlds. Obviously with the lid off, you are sucking in warm/hot air from the engine bay and it will cause a slight decrease in performance.

to my fellow 'home modifiers' and good luck in your projects!

I just put a piece of plastic tube inside the resonator to "bypass it". Seems to work pretty good, and required no "smashing".

As you can see....not all of us needed to 'smash' the resonator!

I was mad that the box tried to kill me and my friend, so we took out our anger on it. Besides, I had no use for the resonator anyway...unless, someone was willing to buy it for like 30 bucks...then on me hehe

that stuff in your throttle body is from the evaporator not through the filter. its just oil vapor. nothing you can do about that other than a catch can?

THis is Toda Party on this username...Internet Explorer and honda-tech.com do NOT like each other.....anyway

ThePunk - that's a cool way that I probably could've done but removing that resonator was THE biggest bitch I've ever had to do, and I don't think i'd want to spend time putting it in again...so as it was just sitting around my room collecting dust I figured i'd butcher it for parts and chuck it...besides, now im like 2 lbs ligher

weight reduction =

And 98TypeR...are you saying that the oil vapors flowed against the air coming in from the throttle body and that is the resulting deposits from those vapors??? i wouldn't think vapors would be that powerful to flow agains the incoming air flow, and as far as a catch can goes, its connected to the PCV and the intake manifold, so i dont think it would solve any problems with oil deposts pre-throttle body... ?

What is the evaporator???

He would be referring to the crap in the throttle body that was mentioned earlier. (one more post for me)

I'm not all that sure if you want the piping pointing up. It will hold water. I'd point it towards the front of the car somewhat angled down.

very nice job
alot of people seem to be ditching the AEM in favor of the stock intake or Comptech Icebox
