WOW!!! NOPI cancels all drag, drift and car show events for 2008
You know things are getting really bad when an industry event that's been going on for 20 years is cancelled...

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">For 20 years, a mass of automotive enthusiasts has descended upon Atlanta Motor Speedway for the NOPI Nationals Motorsports Supershow. NOPI, a Georgia-based aftermarket parts and accessories dealer, built a loyal following with their Nationals Supershow, attracting upwards of 90,000 attendees each year. Through the success of their car and trucks shows the company also took on the task of running a nationwide drag race and drifting series more, but this year NOPI won't be filling Atlanta Speedway's infield for the 21st year this September, as the Nationals Motorsport Supershow has been canceled. In fact, all remaining 2008 NOPI events from car shows to drag racing and drifting, have been called off.
According to NOPI, the rationale behind the decision is due to the tough times currently being endured by the automotive industry. With vehicle sales in the dumpster, one can only image that accessory purchases are also being cut from most consumers' budgets. Compounded with the rising fuel prices and reduced event attendance, finishing out the event schedule did not make economic sense for NOPI. It is sad to hear of such a staple event forced to shutter. Hopefully NOPI can weather the storm and bring back the debauchery another season. </TD></TR></TABLE>

Weren't those things just rice conventions anyways? At least, whenever I saw that NOPI show on Speed that was the impression that i got.
Not surprised. I can tell you my own personal spending habits have moved away from automotive parts. This economy will take it's toll on events like Nopi.
Now if Hot Ricer Nights woul follow suit that would be welcome as well.

They are indeed. I went to two back in my youth.
Still, there were some nice cars there, and it's a bit sad to see it close down, however ricey it was.

I've done the same though. I've found my money spent on guitars and my mt bike to be much more fulfilling than car parts.

I wasn't really commenting on the drag racing aspect, but rather the car show portion and whatever you want to call that mess in the picture.

Do people like you yell "rerun" at the TV whenever a Seinfeld episode comes on?

In CA, I stopped going to import car shows about 10 years ago but I'm sure that out in the boondocks... it must've been a festive affair to look forward to every year.

No, I'm just posting the obligatory "Repost" remark whenever an article is reposted? Just like the obligatory "CRX" poll option, or the "she's cheating on you" post in every girl thread ever.

Perhaps this is a good thing. That NOPI show on speed channel made us all look like a bunch of giant douchbags. The show had potential to be a good 30 minutes of drag racing. Instead they figured people wanted to see the "lifestyle" event of playing xbox, talking to people with ugly riced 3rd gen eclipse's, and models with giant fake **** that you could drive a dumptruck between with room to spare.

He's going to have to step up big for 2009, seeing as almost all of the drag racers are going to be looking to him now.

True. With NHRA and their BULLSHIT politics gone, NOPI dropping out, it looks everyone who left is coming back, lol.

If y'all are still down for an event, AMS is hosting the event without NOPI. I made another thread given above
