my friend is having a problem with his 99' accord.. help?
The 99 Honda Accord has been having staring problems in the hottest days of the summer. The engine refuses to idle and the car will stall out. He has to leave it for 30 minutes (too cool down) before trying to start the car again. Two different repair places have no clue what it is. The only hint he has gotten was someone blaming the main relay. If you have any info for him, this would help out a lot. He needs to stop getting stuck at all the Adult Stores... its getting pretty embarrassing when I have to drive up and get him.
with the starting problem see why its not starting, next time it doesnt start throw throttle body or carb cleaner or starter fluid down the intake and see if cranks , if not test spark, weak or none at all. At least you can follow one of those paths to the culprit. main relay maybe the starting problem but not sure about the idleing and stalling part though. When u say refuse to idle do you mean the engine cranks for a sec then dies again?
Besides my '99 Accord, I have a '93 Volvo and a '95 Camry. On the Volvo, the symptoms you describe are a textbook example of a bad crank position sensor (also called an RPM sensor), or a bad fuel pump relay.
Since relays are already suspect, I'd recommend changing out the fuel pump relay and see what happens.
I've never heard of this problem on an Accord (or Camry) though.

The main relay has a known problem with solder joints on its circuit board that crack & open when they get hot. So it's worse when the interior of the car is very hot.

Maybe that makes the interior even hotter???

Actually I re-read your first post. A main relay wouldn't cause problems idling & sometimes stalling. When the main relay goes, the fuel pump doesn't run. Period. The starter will crank & crank & the engine never gets fuel. Only rarely will it stall an engine that's already running. And it's all-or-nothing. The fuel pump quits running.
Fouled spark plugs? Bad plug wires? Messed-up adjustment of the base idle speed?

Having the same problem today. It was 108 degree heat index today and my 99 Accord won't start after running earlier in the day. Before I call the tow truck, I'd like to have a few ideas of what the problem might be. Any guesses as to whether a tune-up, switching out the main relay, or something else would be a better first try? We're at 117,000 miles.
did u check for spark, did u shoot starter fluid in the intake? instructions were on my previous post. if u wanna know u gotta try the stuff were saying and give us answers, Like jim said if the fuel pump stalls then engine its a done deal, and a bad main relay is gonna give u NO fuel. u havent answered anybodys questions so who knows?

Actually, yours sounds different, so you might want to start another thread so it's not confusing.

I own a 95 civic and I've been having the same problems. I keep stalling whenever I put the clutch in. I had to rev it up to 4000 RPMs just to get it started at ecery light to get it home. Seems to happen most in hot summer weather. Had the same problem last year - changed out the spark plugs and it was ok until now. I checked th spark plugs this time and there is no change. It's definitely getting fuel because I was able to get it home. All shops I've brought it to can't find the problem. Any other ideas?
Gidge, yours sounds different. You ought to start your own thread.
How does it behave when you idle in neutral with the clutch engaged (pedal not pressed down)? In neutral, does it make a difference when you engage & disengage the clutch?
