[audio] Help! first time installing a new cd deck!
OK I drive a 1985 Honda Accord w/ the stock OEM radio still in. How do I exactly remove the OEM factory radio? People tell me use a flathead and pop it out, but I dont want anything to brake.
Secondly, I bought an Alpine 9856 CD Deck (includes the cd deck, face plate, nuts and bolts, cd plate case, some two thin gray bars like, and wires colored pink, black, yellow, white, green, blue, orange, purple, red, and gray). The store did not have any Harness for my 85 Accord, so they ordered it for me and I should be picking it up sometime this or next week. The instruction booklet is VERY very confusing! But I did read the safety precautions and warnings.
The problem is.. once I remove my OEM factory radio, how do I exactly install my Alpine CD Deck? What do I plug in first in the back of the CD deck? Where do the nuts and bolts go? What do the colors represent on the wire? What are the two thin gray bars do? On my wires show one end w/ plastic female ends and the other end looks like it just got cut off or something. Btw, I guess this is how it will look like when everything is plugged in?
(Starting from the front of my car): OEM factory wires <-> 85 Accord Harness <-> The different colored wires <-> back of cd deck <-> front of cd deck (in front of me)
Sorry this is my first time I hardly know anything about cars and installation, but I would like to learn.
Heres the list of accesories I just read:
1 Head unit
1 Power cable
1 Mounting sleeve (it looks like its already installed)
1 Carrying case
2 Bracket keys
4 screws (M5x8)
1 set of Owners manual

Man a 85, whoa. I havent seen one of them in a while. If I remeber right all you have to do is pop off the panel under the radio and remove the 2- 8 mm screws holding the radio in. Slide it out and the new radio cage in its place. The older 85 radio was a din unit. As far as the harness all you have to do is match the color to color and plug it in. Real simple
Ok so since I dont have the wiring harness yet... is there anything else I can connect to the back of the head unit besides the power cable? I dont get the instructions when it tells me to screw in the bolt studs, chassis, or w/e. Is that necessary? There are two female connectors on the back of the head unit... what do I need to connect to these? I just want to put my head unit in and listen to my CD and radio. Nothing else.
There is also this map diagram where it shows the power cable colors... is this all connected to the wiring harness towards my OEM factory harness wires?
What are the bracket keys used for?
And for the mounting sleeve, do I just leave it installed on the head unit?
Any setup instructions w/ pictures would be great!

Do yourself a favor and wait to you get your harness. You do not want a hack job. This will save you time and headaches in the future. The sleeve mounts in the hole that you took the radio out off. Slide it out of the radio and place it in the hole. Bend the tabs around the cage to sucure it in to place. Then plug in you antena wire and the radio harness. Thats it. I Will try to find pics
This should help... http://www.installdr.com/Insta...1.pdf

awesome but a few questions...
I'm not going to solder anything because I'm getting the wire harness for my 85 Accord. And I dont think I have any of these tools... I'll try and ask one of my friends if I can borrow. I notice that they mentioned the 8mm and 10mm screws, but where do the new radio screws come into play? Are they not needed because its already in the mounted sleeve which locks it in? x_x
And also, I notice the wire diagram on this guide. It shows the factory wire and the new radio wires. I see that they are wired w/ different colors (Pin A - Right Speaker - Red w/ Yellow stripers connect with Purple?)... I thought I was suppose to wire the colors w/ the same color?
For the mounted sleeve where the little bending things are... am I suppose to bend it all the way up or something? How can I tell how much I should bend it?

Ok I just encountered a problem. I see that my type of Accord is not the same as the one in the guide. I drive a hatchback so its different and its a single din. I took out the lid on the bottom, but I dont see any gray box under (just a bunch of wires) and I dont have a digi cam for pictures. Do you know if Audio shops can show me how to remove it for free?
The HU is the same in all 85s, [single din] the "color for color" wiring is from the new HUs wire harness to the adapter harness that I linked, [or one like it] it will plug into the oem radio harness plug, [that is now plugged into the stock HU] that of coarse is unless you are getting a "smart harness" like these... http://www.scosche.com/scosche...ID=43 then it is plug and play.
The "gray box" is not is not "under" the trim panel, it is under the panel, just above the carpet, it is held in place with 2 10mm bolts, [one on each side].
Once the gray box is removed you should be able to see the 2 8mm machine screw/bolts, [step 2] the screws go through a bracket and into the lip at the back of the stock HU, [pix above the pix in step 2] once they are removed the HU will slide out, unplug the ant. and radio harness.
The mounting sleeve that comes with the new HU will slide into the opening, to keep it there bend a few "tabs" to hold it in place, [I bend 1 on each side].
To support the back of the new HU a "back brace" has to be made, nothing more the an "L" bracket that is flush with the bottom of the HU, [just like the one on the stock HU, just a lot narrower] and mounted to the the same bracket as the stock HU, [but with just 1 screw].

thanks i got it in now, w/ the help of my friend of course. it was actually a black thin wall that was covering it. everything works properly now, but one more problem before it is really complete... the head unit wont snap onto the mounting sleeves, but i can slide it in.. its just loose in the mounting sleeves for now. i read the booklet and it never came w/ mounting brackets. the only extra item in my alpine box are 4-5 screws..
You can get a "back brace" from any car audio store, like this... http://www.scosche.com/scosche...D=BS9
What is the model of the Alpine HU?

NM, found it on your other tread, [CDA-9856] The "keys" are to release the HU from the sleeve, if the HU is not "locking" into the sleeve it means the "locking tabs" are not folded in enough, the "lock tabs" are on each side of the sleeve, [one on each side] they should be folded in so the "sit" inside the sleeve 1/8"-1/4" so they will "pop' into the "slots" on the side of the HU, locking the HU into the mounting sleeve, the "keys are used to move the "locking tabs" out of the "slots" in the HU to release it.
One more thing, the Alpine CDA-9856 is a "high power" HU, so for best performance the HUs 12V+ constant , [yellow] should be wired directly to the batt. pos.(+).

yeah,i didnt move the lock tabs that lock in.. so i just pull the locking tabs w/ the 2 keys INWARD, right? like a X shape.
Then make the rear support bracket, ["L" bracket] and mount it properly, I have installed many HUs in Honda/Acuras without bending any of the sleeves mounting tabs, or if customer has no sleeve or the wrong sleeve, [HU will not lock into sleeve] by just using the "back brace", it is, after all, the way the stock HU is held in the dash.
