Default D hybrid transmission from hell

This is a trans that I am working on for a friend of mine. I'm not here to "promote" my trans builds. After much thought and evalutating the gear ratios and ****, I'm putting this thing together and showing what YOU guys can do with some of your left over parts. This is actually what I originally wanted to build for myself, but I went with the mfactory 3/5 gears because I anticipated a future boost build

There are certain racing leagues that allow aftermarket final drives + LSD, but must use oem gears. This is BARELY legal in those leagues, because it uses 100% oem 1-5 gears

D16Y8 Transmission, Quaife ATB LSD, all new synchros/hubs/sleeves for 1-2-3-4 gears, 5th was still good, all new bearings.

1st gear = 3.25 (same for all D trans)
2nd gear = 1.909 (d16y8 2nd)
3rd gear = 1.346 (JDM DOHC ZC 3rd)
4th gear = 1.066 (92-95 cx/vx 3rd gear as 4th)
5th gear = 0.771 (cable dx/si 5th)
final = 4.928 (mfactory)

RPM Drops
1st -> 2nd = 41.2% drop
2nd -> 3rd = 29.4% drop
3rd -> 4th = 20.8% drop
4th -> 5th = 27.7% drop

for a full race transmission, the 0.878 zc 5th might be more ideal, but with the slightly taller 0.771 cable DX/SI 5th, this is a bit more street friendly

link to the fatboyraceworks calc with the values already plugged in
http://www.fatboyraceworks.com...are=1

gears end at the following mph with 195/50/15s, 7500 rev limit
1st = 31.61
2nd = 53.81
3rd = 76.32
4th = 96.37
5th = 133.24

60mph @ 3400
70mph @ 3950
80mph @ 4500

everyone loves pictures right?

MFactory 4.928 (69/14) final drive

New synchros

New sleeves

nerdtacular trans shot, the LSD on the right is the one that's used

some of the bearings, dollar bill is used for size reference

ISB removal

I met up with Mista Bone and gave him this VX mainshaft 3rd gear for modification, he said it didn't need to be modified, like the normal 1.0333 zc 4ths gears do, but he cleaned it up just to be safe.

mainshaft cable 4th gear looks like this, no clearance for the flipped over 92-00 synchro hub

notice how the cable 3rd gear has lots of clearance for the synchro hub

And that's it! I am tired of having to explain the inner diameter modification of cable 4ths as hydro 4ths!

crx si 5th gear of 0.771

Assembled countershaft

Assembled mainshaft

3-4 synchro part numbers that you probably won't find anywhere else

that's all for now, I'll post more as I get further along

thanks for thehatchninja for hanging out while I tooled around with this

nice setup...

why would this setup be different for a Turbo build?

you wouldn't want the 4.928 final because you'd be running out of gear in the 1/4th, unless you don't mind shifting into 5th

gotcha... so same gears just a different final.

i might mate the B series tranny to the D once I beat this one to death a little more.

im assuming the ratios change on the B tranny?

platinum.

FOR THE RECORD. I AM NOT PROMOTING my builds.

I work 45ish hours a week and I am taking math courses. do not PM me about working on your transmission.

Got my attention.

What does a complete rebuild run parts-wise?

I'm sure it get's up there quickly.

Can we PM you with questions while we work on our own transmissions?

all the oem bearings are like $200
about $225 in the sleeve kits
$25 in the used 1.0666 3rd gear
about $100 in the zc 3rd (hard as hell to come by)
$480 in the 4.9 final
$875 in the quaife

basically around $2000 total

but this trans was totally messed up, 2nd/3rd/4th grinded and 5th popped out.

and the trans ran low on oil. had it been a good trans he could have saved like $350, and going with an obx instead would have saved him about $450

I concur. Thanks for the info.

I plan to build a custom tranny down the road for a budget D build.

It's highly unlikely that I'll drop the $$$ for a complete overhaul.

what are the motor specs that this tranny is being put on......and hopefully that motor is revving high......or else that final drive might be a little too high

lol, the transmission is going to go on a BONE STOCK D15Z1 for now. He plans on building a d15z1 with PMS pistons and a y5 head of some sort, kinda of like one of the other builds that I was planning on. With a built head and the higher 1.62 r/s ratio that the d15z1/d15b offers we're hoping to make power at higher RPMs, at least 8000rpm.

The reason that it's going on the d15z1 for now is because the ISB on his original vx trans is failing.
