I was running an oil cooler but took it off when my motor blew up (it was winter time) and now I'm re-thinking using it since I see oil temps around 220F while daily driving with the hot Florida summers)

I had it where my fog light would go on my EG (see picture), but now I got a new bumper without the fog light holes cut, and if I do cut them, I'll get fog lights.

So the question is, where is everyone running theirs? I'm worried about putting it between my intercooler and radiator as the intercooler is alreay blocking the entire grill area.

 

DID you put a heatshield between the OC and IC piping?
My old setup channeled the air from the OC through slits in the wheel well cover.

The sheetmetal aluminum on the bottom and body side of the OC ensures that air flows in the correct direction and does not heat the IC piping.


I moved the OC behind the IC after I installed a Civic radiator because I made a coldair box for my rightside facing turbo. You can see the shielded blue OC lines behind the IC.

 

Out of curiosity, what were were oild temps before and after the oil cooler?

 

Almost no difference. Had the OC been placed between the IC and radiator I probably would have noticed a slight temp rise.

coolant temp gauge most likely wouldnt show oil cooler efficiency as the water temp is controlled by the thermostat.

 

We're talking about oil temp, not water.......

Most of us have a seperate oil temp gauge.....at least I do!

 

Yes I know, thats why I said oil temps wont be noticed from the coolant gauge.
I dont have an oil temp gauge.

He meant by changing the location of the heat exchanger.

 

SLOWPOKE.....are you sure? becuase the question that dee answered was "what were were oild temps before and after the oil cooler?"

So to me....his answer means he did not notice a temp change.

I could be wrong though.

 

Im not 100% sure no. But I have talked to Dee about his cooler setup before long ago and I though he had stated the temps were better. Its almost impossible to believe that they did not change at all, even with a thermostat and perfect temps before.

 

To the right of the radiator. Went from 250+F temps to 150F. I use a permacool thermostat to keep it around 180F.

I can't put mine where the AC is as I still have ac. I am thinking just like dee did in the wheel well is where I have to put mine (again basically)

Does anyone think a PC type small fan will stand up in the wheel well area?

I'm also worried about putting the cooler in my wheel well area as much of my plastic has been eaten away by drag radials.......

7 1/2 quarts. good lord. the cooler should only take about 1/2 - 1 quart. So you have 2-3 quarts in the lines?

To clear the confusion:

I expected the oil temps to rise a little since air had to go through the radiator before reaching the OC. I actually saw slightly cooler temps when the OC was moved to the new location. Air flow was somewhat restricted in the original position. I was actually thinking about adding a temp controlled fan for the new location but it looks like a fan is not needed.

There is a significant difference between running with and without an OC on a street car. I saw a huge difference in temps (cooler) when I originally installed the OC.

My APP setup has a thermo controlled bypass that is 90/10 (10% goes to the OC)when cold and 20/80 (80% goes to the OC) when hot. This type of setup ensures that there are no loss of oil pressure issues.

Aluminum Moroso pan + APP OC kit = 7 quarts of dino juices every 1500km.

not to thread jack, but does anybody have a diagram/pic of how the oil cooler is supposed to look and be ran on a JDM B16? Just wondering because I have a JDM block and had to plug the holes in the water jacket for the oil cooler. Would be kinda cool to run one with all this damn traffic and stop 'n go stuff going on here.

Maybe like a little heater core or a small radiator like they use in PC watercooling applications.

I was actually wondering more about the stock JDM one. That one uses the coolant in the block to cool things down I guess.
